Spine Angle and the Unstoppable Surge

Wed, 04/21/2010 - 19:00 -- Don Trahan

Before (or after) you view this video, which is all about spine angle control and controlling knee movement in the golf swing, there'€™s a story behind this outtake that is pure '€œSurge.'€ Also, if you click on the “full screen” button on the video player, you might be able to see this even better (try that on your second viewing.)

Here'€™s the story. We were shooting near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina at sensation Colleton River Plantation, in August. The heat that day broke records, which is saying something for the Lowcountry. We had been shooting for well over 9 hours. The crew (I think there were 9 or 10) was beat. I was beat. The sun was going down. The humidity was 100%. Don had already used up 9 shirts. But one of the crew, a golfer, asked The Surge about tee height.

(Please note: The crew on a shoot are usually fantastic people. They do precisely what they are told by the director. They are gentlemen and gentlewomen. But they seldom tie their tennis shoes, look a bit like something just washed up on the beach, and wear a fascinating array of discordant hats, shirts and shorts. That goes for the guys and ladies. And they are also my heroes.)

If you want to go home to your wife and children (or significant other or just friends) after 9 brutal hours under the coastal South Carolina sun, DO NOT ask The Surge such a question.

If you'€™ve seen Don in any of our videos, you know his passion as a teacher. When one of the guys innocently posed the question (I believe he was packing up his lighting equipment), Don turned the situation into a lesson. Our audience? The film crew! (Those are the voices you hear in the background.)

The result of this innocent comment is an extraordinary, impromptu demonstration of control and why the Peak Performance golf swing is truly a thing of beauty '€“ and precision.

By the way, the following day (the high was 98 degrees, humidity 100+) the six golfers on the crew brought their clubs, hoping for enlightenment. With crew people (possibly a different species, though that is yet to be determined), that just doesn'€™t happen.

Amazing. I need to get to a range and try this. How far does the surge hit his normal drives? I'd be happy with consistent, straight 250-260 yard drives any day.
