Art Hobbs sent a question in to the first webcast of The Surge Show that DJ and I did from his house in Charleston. It's one that I think many of you may be interested in:
"I know that you and Doc favor the smaller size driver head. What size driver head does D.J. use and why?"
Before I answer Art's question, let's review what Doc Griffin and I believe is the proper size driver head because it has a direct bearing on a golfer's ultimate performance. Based on a combination of things such as wind resistance, drag, swing speed, etc., we feel that most golfers (and I include myself in this category) will get superior overall performance from a head that is approximately 360ccs in volume. Almost every OEM club manufacturer has gone super-sized in the past few years in what seemed like an ever-escalating "arms race" to make the biggest (and supposedly best) driver head. The engineering got so wild that the USGA had to finally step in and cap the size at a maximum of 460ccs. Mark my words, now that they can't go any larger, it's just a matter of time before they start going in the other direction and begin building smaller heads again. And I actually think this would be a good thing because I have found that when you miss with a super-sized driver you miss REALLY big and when you miss with a smaller head, the shot still ends up going pretty far and pretty straight. As I always say, "Golf is a game of misses, and he who misses best, wins!"
If you are currently playing with one of these large drivers, and if you still have your old driver and it has a smaller head, pull it out of storage and head to the range and test it out against the big boy. Chances are you'll find that you have more accuracy and just as good distance with the smaller club.
Now to answer Art's question, DJ currently plays a 460cc driver because he has signed a contract to represent a certain equipment manufacturer to play with their clubs and all they make is 460cc drivers. We wish he had an option to play a smaller head but that's not possible at the moment so he's had to content himself with having Doc go over every driver he uses to make sure the shaft is perfect in every aspect and the swing weight exactly matches DJ's profile.
Keep it vertical!
