Several years ago the Surge was giving a demonstration in Columbia, South Carolina, to about 500 people at a golf show. At that show he was definitely a lone cry in the wilderness. It was at the height of the big turn and 'bring the backswing to parallel' and beyond, mostly beyond. Of course, he was advocating the PPGS: limited turn, ¾ backswing.
As he always started out these demonstrations back then, he asked the audience, 'Why are golfers not getting better? They aren't playing by the rules. No, not USGA rules, the rules of physics and physiology. The more you violate the rules, the more you increase your error, the more you decrease your chance for success.'
By force of personality ' the Surge IS a talker ' and from what he was saying, no one left the conference hall. He showed them that the long swing was in negative acceleration at impact and the short swing was in positive acceleration at impact. 'The club head has to be in positive acceleration to have a maximum performing hit,' he, more or less, shouted.
When the Surge was done, I watched all 500 leave, shaking their heads, wondering if this guy was nuts. Everyone left except one: Trevor Neighbors, a biomechanist grad student at Cal-State. He believed. This video is the beginning of his story with the Surge.
