The Evils of Hitting Down

Sat, 02/26/2011 - 10:59 -- Don Trahan

There are certain training aids out there that tell you to swing down on the ball. They scare me.

If you'€™ve been with us for any length of time, you know we'€™re all about swinging up. Swinging down on the ball causes the upper body to move forward. You'll pull youself out of dynamic balance, end up taking huge divots and lose control.

Think about it. If you were trying to skip a rock across a pond, would you throw the rock down into the water? Where does it go if you do that? Down is free, it doesn'€™t need help. Swinging up is where you need speed and strength.

We want the club to just nip the ball off the ground. We'€™re all for shallow divots and swinging up to the T-Finish.

So any aid that says '€œswing down,'€ will not help you with the '€œSurge Swing.'€ It will hurt it.

Can you go over measuring the lenght of a club as you've done a few weeks ago with the emphasis on the exact point we start measuring? Your driver [43"] and 3-wood [42"] seem a little short.

I enjoy your videos!
