Feel Versus Reality

Tue, 05/24/2011 - 11:15 -- Don Trahan

You may remember my advice about practice swing. I always say you take a practice swing (or two) to feel the swing. And when you'€™re ready you swing the feel. But it was pointed out on the blog recently that reality and feel are two different things. Like when your swing goes south and a slice into the trees is your reality. What can you do '€¦ immediately?

You want to get that correct swing '€œfeel'€ back. If you'€™re on the range, you can use a camera, check yourself out from face on and from down the line. That'€™s a good way to see precisely where you'€™re going wrong. But here'€™s a hint. Make sure you have video of a good swing to compare it to. But what if you'€™re out playing? How do you make your reality a ball going straight down the fairway or up on the green?

My favorite advice to get the feeling back is to use something you normally have: your shadow. Get your back to the sun and check out if your head is bobbing up and down, or if you have a reverse weight shift, or anything else that'€™s throwing off your swing. Your shadow never lies '€“ the shadow is reality. And it can definitely help you back to '€œswinging the feel.'€

Keep it vertical,

The Surge

DanG,
I've had no problem with the videos, nor have most people here. The trouble is NOT with Surge's servers. The main videos on the page are hosted at YouTube, and some ISPs (illegally and without informing their users) limit YouTube traffic, causing bottlenecks and thus stuttering videos. The simplest solution is to press play and then pause and go get a cup of coffee (or something more relaxing if you're already uptight) while the video loads all the way. Once it's mostly in your computer's cache, it should play through without any stuttering.

Dick, Sorry to hear about all the damage in your area, but glad that you and yours are ok. You, and all those effected are in my prayers.

Robert and Boog are correct...it is your computer connection.  There has only been one instance where it has been a Swing Surgeon issue, and it was actually to do with getting the download of the video onto You Tube.  I have high speed internet and have never had a single instance of not being able to view the videos in their entirety.  And never with start-and-stop viewing.  Smooth viewing from start to finish.  Robert's suggestion of starting the video, pausing it to allow the video to load and cache on your computer, and then playing it will provide you with the uninterrupted viewing you desire if your connection cannot be improved.

I did not know who was writing until I got to the end.  I guess the cloud of secrets is lifting.  Good to put a name with your thoughts and prayers my friend.

Glad the physical therapy is working out for you.  It sure does hurt to get better, doesn't it?

When are you coming out from behind the bamboo curtain?

Life is short and the 4.5 hrs rounds on the increase. Not wanting to spend a whole day at the club and giving myself 20 mins to warm up before a round - what is best routine for a good warm up of 20 mins?

Craig,
Actually an i phone or droidx (that's my phone) works fine and downloads easily. However if you can, get a camera. It does help to video tape our swing. Unlike many of the guys I haven't gotten bold enough to post my swing on line. At any rate, I've had my wife tape my swing(with my droid) from various angles it reveals alot and really helps one see where adjustments are needed.BTW she's my best advocate and critic. So it helps to have a friend or companion (or golf buddy whomever) that becomes familiar with what you want to look like that will be honest. She's knows the Surge swing well because of my fanatical study of it :)

Boog,

By turning the key, of course LOL!

When I get it right, I start by moving my right shoulder back and up. When I get it wrong, it is by dropping my left shoulder toward the ball. I'm totally inconsistent on starting the BUS. It is something I'm working diligently on the past couple of weeks. I really need to remember to "squeeze the trigger, not jerk it!" Right, Dick?

I, too, add my prayers and thoughts for those in distress.
