First, Hit It Straight

We had a question on the blog asking if middle and high handicap golfers should learn to work the ball or just work it down the middle.

In this video I tell a story about a pro friend of mine who gave me some very good advice. I'll give it to you in the short version. “Play your shot.”

If you're above a 5 handicap, the shot you should be working on is one that goes straight. Period. Working the ball, making it draw or fade, isn't something you need to worry about. What you need to worry about is keeping it in play on every shot.

Before your work the ball, you have to be 100% confident in your best shot, the one you can always depend on. The one that lands in the fairway and on the green. Maybe you'll have to lay up. Maybe you'll end up with a 15 foot putt. That's just fine.

Play the probabilities. Always play the high probability of success shot. As a middle to high handicapper, you owe it to yourself t “work it down the middle.” Straight.
