It's That Second Shot

I have a question from Cory who is an Inner Circle member and it is really a very good question. I think again a lot of us probably suffer with this. '€œI am having a terrible time with my second shot. With the Peak Performance golf swing I am hitting 75% of the fairways. It is my 3 iron or fairway wood that is giving me fits. The ball is flying right almost every time. Any suggestions'€?

For starters, hitting the fairway 75% of the time is extremely good and if you were on the PGA Tour you would be up there in probably the top 5% of best drivers of the golf ball. But, the question I have to ask again, '€œIs why are you using a 3 iron?'€ Even on the PGA Tour today there are not that many guys using 3 irons in their bag anymore.

My thoughts have to go to the fact that I think the 3 iron is the problem, including the fairway wood. Now again, are you talking about a 3 wood or a 5 wood? I am guessing more it is probably a 3 wood. Both the 3 iron and the 3 wood, you have to have a lot of club head speed to really get those balls airborne. If you don'€™t have enough club head speed to get them really airborne, the odds are they are going to fly off low and very much to the right, or when you get tired of the right you throw the club at it and smother it.

So, the only other option would be is if you do have enough club head speed to swing those and hit them well, then we have to start looking at the clubs. Again, if it is consistently low right, you have one of two issues. Either the clubs are too stiff and they never kick, so the club is never squared up and it is going to the right. And/or it could be the shaft is too weak and you are swinging it fast enough that again it is not going to kick soon enough to square up and you will leave it out to the right. Then after you hit a few of those off to the right you will flip the club at it, throw the club at the ball a little quicker. But since you say it is almost exclusively right, I am going to go with the fact that it could be too stiff.

Again, it depends on your club head speeds, which means you have to be a really developing some tremendous club head speeds to get 3 irons in the air. Heck on the LPGA Tour most of the ladies don'€™t even have 5 irons in their bag. So, my advice would be, if you'€™ve got a 3 iron get rid of it. If you are still hitting your 4-iron good that would be the highest one I would have. If it is a 3 wood that is giving you problems, get the shaft checked and/or use a more lofted fairway wood. Try to find a 4 wood or even a 5 wood and that should help. Take a look at the clubs, because it could be the clubs more than you. So hopefully this will give you some insights to help with you being able to hit those longer fairway shots a lot better.

The Surge!
