Lag And Your Club Shaft

Sat, 06/11/2011 - 15:33 -- Don Trahan

A couple of days ago I talked about the importance of lag in your swing. Well, that inspired Lynn '€œDoc'€ Griffin, our Director of Club Fitting, to go an important step further. He explains why you'€™ll never create the proper lag with the wrong shafts.

Golfers who can keep that 90 degree angle they create at the top of the backswing until just before impact need an entirely different shaft than golfer who can'€™t maintain that angle. As Lynn explains, professionals, better amateurs and strong amateurs create a tremendous amount of load on the shaft and need a stiffer tip.

Typically, if the shaft is too soft, the ball tends to go left. If the shaft is too stiff, the ball tends to go right. Getting the proper equipment for your swing produces immediate improvement and lower scores.

Thanks, Doc! Great information.

As an aside, one of our local courses had their "Golf Fest" over the last two days and I saw one thing there I thought would really amuse you. A small company from Vacaville, California called Hammerhead Golf selling grooveless hybrids. The owner of course said that the lack of grooves would reduce the spin so the balls would roll out further than other hybrids. He wasn't amused when I told him I knew a few guys who'd argue that point with him. I did hit one of his 18* hybrids, though, and it had a nice feel and good ball flight.

Hey Robert,
I'm sure your game is better than mine, and I know your swing is better than mine, and you now have a fitted driver, so I would say "no contest". Ha ha!

Lucky for me they don't give extra points for having a "good swing". And I really DO think I have a good swing. It may not be what anyone else would want to use but as long as I know what works for me and can repeat it pretty well that's all that matters anyway.
I don't think I'll be changing too much on purpose but as I've said before some things that are considered "flaws" are actually getting better without me trying to change anything.

Besides if I ever did develop a "perfect" swing we wouldn't have as much to talk about. LOL

At least I'm playing good enough that the people I'm playing with don't try to tell me what I'm doing "wrong" anymore. They just mostly spend a lot of time looking confused. LOL

Progress, and sometimes lack thereof, report:

Mike came down and spent the day Saturday and the night so we were able to play in the Saturday game together.

Keep in mind that with my own personal evaluation our par 70 course is that it's 2 1/2 to 3 strokes a side easier than a course with a course rating of 72. (Never has been "course rated").

I shot a 69 with 2 birdies and 1 bogie on the front and 3 birdies and 3 bogies on the back. Didn't hit my irons nearly as well as I had been hitting them but hit my driver 1,000 times better than I had been hitting it. Chipped well and putted well. Having a major "gap" problem that is costing me strokes with 115 to 120 yard shots. My pitching wedge is flying over the green way too often even if I try to take something off. My gap wedge only goes that far if I hit it perfectly and then it has enough spin that if the pin is in the front there is a really good chance of it spinning back off of the green. I need to get that problem solved because it probably cost me 3 strokes Saturday.
All in all a good day for me though.

Then in the nine hole scramble my driver was "on fire" and with the way Mike and I were chipping and putting we easily won the scramble with 9 under.

Mike shot a 65 after only playing a few times in the last few months. He has lost a few yards of distance even though he is quite a bit stronger than he has ever been. I am usually a little longer than he is right now, although he still hits the fairways more often.

This morning my wife didn't have to work until 11:00 so she wanted all of us to go play 9 holes. All three of us played about as well as we could possibly play. At one stretch of holes we shot 6 under for 4 holes as a three ball team and she is really a beginner ( and WILL NOT practice) and rarely makes pars and almost never makes birdies (until today). LOL She had three pars and a birdie in that 4 hole stretch. She shot 5 over for the nine. Not bad. ;-)
I shot a 33 for that nine. Not bad. ;-) Except that I missed birdie putts from 4 and 7 feet on 17 and 18. Not good.:-(
