People often ask me, "Surge, where do you come up with the ideas for your daily video tips? You never seem to run out of good ideas". Well, the answer is I get inspiration from just about anyone I come into contact with--whether it's someone posting a question on the blog, or someone who takes a lesson from me or even from DJ as we are practicing--I am always looking and listening for things that I think may be on a lot of people's mind. Perhaps that's why we get comments like the one subscriber Kevin McCarthy made the other day about the value of these tips to him. Kevin had some nice things to say but it was his last comment that triggered the thought for today's video. He stated that he always thought the the Surge Swing was an easy swing to learn but that he made it harder from all the bad things he's learned before.
Kevin's statement is true for just about all of us, I suspect. I think the hardest part of the game is the one that is played on that 8 inch course between your ears. There are a lot of instructors out there that stress the need to create muscle memory so that you can groove your swing. I couldn't disagree more! Do muscles have the ability to think, to direct your body to move in just the right way to make a good swing? Is a muscle able to sense when something feels right...or wrong with the swing you are about to make? Only your mind can do all of that and that is why I stress over and over again the importance of making a good practice swing before every shot you take, even when you are on the practice range. It's mental memory you want to develop, not muscle memory. So when you make a practice swing, do it right so that your mind gets a good idea of exactly what this next shot requires. Make a good setup before you swing so that you can feel the swing rather than try to swing as if you are connecting the dots. You've heard me say my practice shot mantra a thousand times before: "Feel the swing...then swing the feel". You need to engage your mind so you can feel what your body needs to do to make the club do what you want it to do.
Keep it vertical!
