I could probably repeat this tip every other day. Everybody seems to be having problems coming over the top.
In the blog, Jerry said while practicing the vertical swing he was coming over the top and hitting slices or pushing the ball. He wanted to know what was wrong with his downswing.
We talked about this last week, but I want to be perfectly clear. Golfers think that coming over the top has something to do with their downswing. It does. But that's not where the problem begins.
It begins in your backswing. About 90% of the time golfers are taking too big of a turn and they have no choice but to come over the top to try to get to the ball and be square to it at impact. That seldom works. You end up hitting slices of you hold on too long or if you release too early, it's hook territory or dribbles off to the left. What's the secret? Your legs and knees. You need a narrow stance and wide knees. Keeping outward pressure on those knees means you cannot make a big turn. Turn to the aiming line then up the tree.
Just remember, the Surge Swing is a limited turn, vertical, ¾ backswing. No more 'over the top' for you, Jerry.
The Surge!
