Anyone who knows me also knows my views on the nearly single-minded obsession that many amateurs and professionals have with distance. This is undoubtedly because, as the equipment manufacturers look for new ways to grow, they churn out ads that practically guarantee that you can add 5,10, 15 yards or more with their latest and greatest 'discovery."
If only that were true! Golf always has been, and always will be, about getting around the course with the fewest number of stokes possible, not how far you can hit a drive. That's why I always love to watch major championship golf because the way the tournament organizers set up the course puts a premium on shot making. Finding fairways and greens and consistently making pars is sometimes the recipe for a weekend move up the leaderboard. That was exactly the case at the 93rd PGA Championship last week at Atlanta Athletic Club.
What you may not know is that the last time the PGA Championship was contested at Atlanta Athletic Club, the course played about 400 yards shorter than this year. The year was 2001 and David Toms held off Phil Mickelson to win down the stretch by playing conservative and smart golf. David Toms is not one of the bigger hitters on tour, but if his victory 10 years ago gave any indication to what style of player could emerge victorious this year, a whole host of "shorter" players had a chance to win. This was the story on Day 1 and 2 at the PGA Championship as you saw Steve Stricker, Jerry Kelly, Scott Verplank, and Jim Furyk rise to the top of the leaderboard. Even with the lengthening of the course, these players posted the best scores because they placed a premium on accuracy. Some holes, like #18, simply allowed no room for error. Perhaps one of the toughest finishing holes in golf, this par 4 separated the men from the boys all week long. With water all down the left and bunkers on the right, putting the ball in play became the most important factor. However, even after finding the fairway, the player's job wasn't done. The second shot on 18 required a shot over water and anything missed to the right was most likely wet. Many of the world's best players saw their chances of winning "Glory's Last Shot" disappear after struggling on the last hole.
Jim Furyk was one of the players who had strong rounds on Thursday and Friday, but he dunked two balls on 18 on Saturday to watch his hopes sink. It was said all week that the last four finishing holes would determine who would win or lose and that certainly was the case as Jason Dufner saw his late Sunday lead vanish by the time he hit his drive on 18. But, he would have never been in contention at all if he hadn't driven the ball great all week and relied on being accurate. And despite the fact that Keegan Bradley is considered a long hitter on tour this year, it was his shot making ability that paved the way to victory for this up-and-coming Tour rookie.
So just remember that hitting it long is something we all want to do, but placing emphasis on accuracy and executing smart shots is what will help us to shoot those lower scores.
Keep it vertical,

Club was a 7 Iron.
I found my BUS from watching Dons Swing Examples 09 video. Surge does a little practice move for the take away before he hits each shot. Had a light bulb moment & started mimicing that.ÃÂ I have not noticed that move in his daily videos.
Unfortunately I struggle with Driver & 3 wood.ÃÂ Im thinking of getting them cut down. Next clubs down are H3, H4, & irons, which are all much better.

Stan,
If you classify calling someone's free lesson tip, "Just another rambling opinion" as JD has done, as being positive andÃÂ constructive, I am sorry, but I have to disagree. To me, it seems very insulting and belittling. So yes, JD seems to be a bit of a Prig in regards to someones style of speak being beneath him, as he has demonstrated in offering his opinion.ÃÂ
He seems to think, just because this is a public forum, Surge needs to speak in a very preparedÃÂ professionalÃÂ manner of delivery. What he doesn't realize is, Surge is not giving a public speech, he is talking to all of us as friends and family from his back porch, just the same as if we were there, one on one, sitting beside him, having a beer, and just chatting.
ÃÂ The majority of us like the way SurgeÃÂ deliversÃÂ these daily lesson chats, in a very informal, off the cuff, non-staged, non-teleprompter ,non cold and non formal type of delivery. HeÃÂ choosesÃÂ to talk with and to us, instead of at us. It is not a speech, it is one friend talking to another whileÃÂ visitingÃÂ on his back porch.
If that makes me an All Worked Up BUBBA, I am happy to be one. Very happy to be one.

Agree with everyone that your swing looks pretty good in all the fundamentals. What I notice in watching your transition from the BUS to FUS that the "bump" looks to be out of time with the FUS start. If you watch Surge's swing his bump occurs before the BUS ends, this timing difference makes a huge impact on the power and I believe accuracy. Not sure what to suggest but the bump has to occur before the end of the BUS. My feeling is that any problem you are having is a timing issue. Maybe some of the other surgeites have a good drill for this.

lipout, practice it with your eyes shut. You will have everything concentrated on staying firm in the legs and you will more readily feel when the club is vertical and weightless as it reaches the top of the backswing. That is when you bump. It is only a 'nudge' of 1-2"inches.Anymore and you will overdo it, with predictable results. Good luck.PS Anybody has a better swing than Mr Barkley hahahaha.

Are you kidding?
After reading your description of your swing I expected to see a train wreck.
Even in slow motion it looks fine.
Well I'm off to play golf. If I can get some swings like yours today I will be fine.
P.S. To adjust the out to in problem try a little more turn in the BUS and the club should approach from the inside. It will probably make your forward tree farther right and will help with the finish.
Trust that swing and let it go.
Edit: Oh I forgot. You are not "laid off" at the top. That move after the bump is normal.
Edit: Check your U-Tube messages if you haven't already.

Not laughing at you, but with you. Just my opinion or perception, and I will go no further with the matter.

Hi Brian,
Welcome to the Surge Nation!ÃÂ You'll find that the vast majority of folks on this blog absolutely love and admire Don Trahan and his folksy approach to giving us an awesome free lesson on a daily basis.ÃÂ If You get too tired when listening to the daily tip, then I suggest that You go lay down and take a nap.

Sorry Surge but it's a matter of preparation and having what you want to say clear in mind.ÃÂ If you want to be on a public platform you owe it to your listeners to be somewhat fluent.
And you guys can say 'just don't listen' and that is exactly what everyone with whom I share these tips has done, dismissed Surge as just another rambling opinion.
With my old rotational swing
With my old rotational swing I had a hard time getting my hips going first. Now with the PPGS it doesn't matter if IÃÂ ÃÂ "just bump" or "ÃÂ skip the rock",I have a heck of a time getting it right. Now I know how Charles Barkley feels. My only saving method is to not concemtrate on getting into the mitt, and bumping the hip just as I reach the top of the backswing. This is going to need a ton of concentration and practice but I'll get it right or join Mr Barkley.

Steve it is cool to hear from an insider whoÃÂ is a coach of one of the top 125 players on the PGA and current # 168 in the world rankings. How cool it would be to be inside the ropes for so many PGA events.
Len, like Steve and Jack
Len, like Steve and Jack below, I think the swing looks fine. The one thing I did notice and concentrated on,and I watched it run through 3 times and bumped up my volume, is that on the first ball you said "relatively straight" and then "weak & right" on the others. I think if you review the video again, you'll notice that on ball #1, the position was closer to the left heel. You moved it back slightly with the other balls, so that might be a reason in the difference between ball one & the others. I get tunnel vision when I key in on something but that was main thing I noticed in this go round.Keep up the good work.
Happy Golfing.
edit ps: When I said you moved the ball back, I actually meant that you moved your left foot slightly forward. six one way, half a dozen another but you get the jest of what I was saying. :)
Charlie, That was a very
Charlie, That was a very informative artivle you refered to. Interesting and it confirms the importance of course management for all of us. Everyone should take 5 minutes and read it. The 42 I shot the other day was due to a course management change primarily. I took 3 metal onÃÂ 4 of 7 holes on the nine I played and driver on the other three. (the other two holes were par threes). This especially helped me on both par 5's where my odds of getting on in two are slim anyway. In both cases I took a 3 wood on the tee and was either in the fairway or playably close enough. Then I took 6 or 7 iron and hit it to PW distance of around 100 yards (my most reliable club and length) and then was either on the green or fringe in every case.
The other points in the article were spot on too and certainly back up all Surge says about the importance of fairways and greens. It is particularly true here in Las Vegas where most of our golf courses offer deep rough and desert for wayward drives that leave one S O L!!
You crack me up Jack!ÃÂ

Steve Smith:
Steve Smith:
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ I understood your "explanation" and I agree with it.ÃÂ On my home course, on 16 and 17ÃÂ missing the fariway on the right side is OK -- missing it on the left side is almost a guranteed bogie or worse.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 16 has trees down the left - and a green shaped like a light bulb with the "base" at the front - but totaed about 30* CCW to the fairway.ÃÂ A huge bunker that would normally be on the left side is now almost in the front - withÃÂ 2 other bunkers on the right side and slightly behind the green. And just for fun -- the main irrigation pond is located directly behind and slightly left of the green -- with steep slopes leading into the water.ÃÂ Any tee shot left of the fariway center becomes a problem - even if it is in the fairway.ÃÂ However, tee shots hit into the adjoining 17th fairway are looking at the green, straight between the bunkers with only a few of the skinny desert palme trees to deal with - and they are generally 30 to 40 apart.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 18 is a par 5 with a flood control "ditch" or "gulley" about 8 feet deep by 30 feet wide at the top, with a very narrow "channel" at the bottom., that parallels the fairway for about 350 yards. with several big trees and bushes near the end of it.ÃÂ It is possible to have a stance that is "ball below feet" but a lie that is "ball above feet."ÃÂ Left of the gulley is OB - but it takes a "really big hook" to get there.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Again, a miss to the right, into the 16th fairway presents only the problem of going over or between a thin stand of trees that seperates the fairways.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ On the other 12 driving holes though, I'll "slighly shorter but in the fairway" every time.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG,

An interesting observation of yours. It is time perhaps that the courses favouring long hitters were kept for Pro's and lower handicap competitive events. The handicap system is meant to give a level playing field to all players. How do they justify favouring the long hitters, that being the case? Hardly in the spirit of golf, now is it. The game should surely be challenging the golfers'shotmaking and course management skills and not how far they can hit the ball. That should be kept for the Long Driving events perhaps.
