Shortening Your Driver Is A Weighty Matter

Wed, 01/04/2012 - 19:20 -- Don Trahan

I spent the quiet time between Christmas and New Year's reading the blog and catching up with some of the conversations that have taken place recently. I do this regularly because I find that it's a great place to find ideas for future daily videos. (Don't be bashful about leaving a question there for me--you never know!)

Anyway, I spotted a back-and-forth dialogue about the merits of shortening your driver and whether you should add some weight back to the club head to compensate for the weight of the shaft material you remove. Since the opinions were all over the place on whether to add any, a little or a lot, I thought it would be good for Doc Griffin to set the record straight by making another episode of Doctor's House Call to show exactly what is invloved.

So sit back and enjoy this gem of a daily from one of the best club fitters in the world.

Keep it vertical!

Your probably right. Its kinda sad though to have a parent do that he probably wants to get away from mom. When our youngest daughter had to make her decision for soccer 3 - D1, 4-D2, 6 D3 AND 4 NAIA schools to choose from she asked were we thought she should go we told it was her decision.Just choose a place that you will be happy and get a good education and money talks and everything walks. She choose NAIA and a free ride.

Hi Doc
Just been watching your video on cutting shafts and adding weights, to correct swing weight.
I might be dumb but I have always wondered how you can correct the swing weight by adding weight to the opposite end to where you cut it of. I would have thought it would have made it worse.

Be interesting to see, Steve, his girlfriend is already at Bama on a track scholarship. I never get overly excited about signees until they make it through the door.

Doc,
Very helpful, thanks. Just seeing if I can summarize what you ended up doing to get the correct swingweight. Basically, you cut about two inches off a 45 club, 1.5 from the tip and a 1/2 inch from the butt? Than added the missing gram weight to the tip? I know it is esthetically less attractive but for the rare do it yourselves, are you against "magic dust"- lead tape that Surge and several of us have used instead? The one advantage of the lead tape is that we can adjust amounts (on or off) as we find the most consistent strikes on the sweet spot using impact(or other) tape on the face.
As you have said, many golfers are playing with clubs that are not only too long but too stiff because their swing speed and strength is not what it was but their egos won't allow them to back off in flex or loft. So again maybe just a butt cut and tip or head weight equaling a softer tip may actually work out. I can hear you already, a professional fitting would be best!

Has nothing to do with the swing. Has to do with load and unload of the shaft and tip strength of shaft.

You've read my techniques and thoughts on putting practice in a few epistles I've written, so I won't mention them again, but don't forget the last point, that I pretty much got from listening to Brad Faxon.

Make the best read you can make. Make the best roll you can make and roll the ball like you don't care if you miss it.

And DON'T CARE if you do miss it. (You've done all you could do).

Thank you Steve. I do need to hear the same good advice again and put it to practice. I get it, loose it and get it back. That's golf. You're so right about don't care (as in don't worry). On the last hole I had a 20 footer that I knew was downhill and fast. Knowing the best thought was "trickle" it in I ran it 10 feet by. Of course I had my wife throw the ball back and sure enough I proceeded to  make it at perfect speed twice from the same spot. Funny thing is I often am able to play it as you said but today I did let it all bug me. Imperfect I am. I am getting better at just making the best putt on the best line and speed I can, but today for the most part wasn't one of those days.
Turn the page,
tomorrow will be great!

Try an experiment. Take a stick and tie a rock on the end. Hold the stick all the way at the end, and see how much bend the rock creates when you swing it, then hold it in the middle and do the same. Swing weight can also be viewed as a measure of the effective bending force of the club head, and the shorter the shaft (assuming like materials), the more weight you need on the end to create the same bending force. If the club head is too light for the shaft you're using and the way you swing it, it won't properly bend the shaft and create the kick through impact.

Well, if you want new clubs you could try out the online fitting that Doc does.
If you just need something simple, like shortening your club, you could find a fitter in LA that isn't certified for the Surge swing. Or try to do it yourself (hard to get it right though).

Or you could get on Interstate 20 and head west to Texas.

Boog drove to South Carolina for a fitting (of course he said he drove to Mississippi to get a Dr. Pepper one time too!)
Ha ha!

Can you lesson the weight of the grip to counter act the shortening of the shaft to keep the swing weight the same?

A lot of us, myself included, would probably benefit by a little weight cut from the butt area.

Hey Doc,
What about tip trimming shafts of adjustable drivers...I have a Titleist 910 D..and I want to cut it down to 43.5 or 43...would tip trimming affect replacing the shaft into the  ferrule...Plus could a ferrule weight work??

Cheers,
Marcus

Viable technology which is why we have arranged a special deal with Kenny Knox and the SIK putter.  Difference is the quality of material and the designs available.  Keep your eye open for a video coming out soon with this new offer that we will be running. You can also go to the product page on my website and see them.

Hello Doc,
I have a Nike Str8-Fit Driver (stiff) and a 3W (extra stiff).  What would happen if I switched the shafts? I like the extra stiff on the 3W and would like to try it on the driver.
Thanks
Andy

Nice playing Dick!!!

Not getting strokes next time is what you get for playing too well. Ha ha!

Evidently the long hitters around here didn't get the memo that they aren't supposed to have a short game or be accurate so I don't beat them very often. Has it's advantages though because if enough of them show up I don't have to be a supposed "A" player against other teams with real "A" players that are scratch or better.

I'm looking forward to the championship game but not very confident about our chances but miracles sometimes happen. ;-)

I felt sorry for him. That is supposed to be a big moment of celebration and I have never seen a player that didn't have the support of his family like that.

It went on long after the video ended too. She wouldn't even speak to him or look at him when other people were congratulating him.

Hi Doc

Do you have any recommendations for fitters in the Melbourne Beach, Fl area.

Maybe that is a part of my vertical BOTW challenge. Small butt syndrome.

I am sp glad that you are back.  I can honestly say that I've missed our "Dick".  Yep, I said it!  Happy New Year my friend and all the richest blessings your way.

Nice round Dick. Good to hear from you again. Just like in poker, never show your full hand until you have to. Just enough to win, will keep them hanging around.

It would not affect the hosel but it would mean needinf a new ferrule. They are larger but can be purchase seperately. I think it is a 510.
