The Swing is Smooth and Flowing

Tue, 03/15/2011 - 19:45 -- Don Trahan

A smooth and flowing swing is essential to keeping your swing on plane. Visualizing what that looks like can keep your game on track.

As you all know, Secret #1 in the Surge Swing is '€œGolf is a game of angles. The fewer the better.'€ Angles create over-movement and the more movement you have in your swing the more difficult it becomes to get the clubhead back to the ball square and solid. Not to mention all the extra energy you burn and all the stress and strain you put on your body.

As you practice your swing, visualize the path a roller coaster takes as it climbs to its peak and then plunges straight down before quickly coming up. It'€™s the track that keeps the coaster riding nice and smooth. Well, the same thing happens when you take the club into the catcher'€™s mitt and up the tree and then transition into the forward upswing, following a vertical swing plane through impact up to the T-Finish.

Images like this can help you feel the swing as you prepare to take your shot. Then, once you feel the swing...swing the feel!

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

DoctorManny,

In addition to what Jackoz and Dick said, you may also want to check the length of your clubs. If they're too long, you can't really swing them vertically correctly. You might try choking down on the driver a bit to see if that helps.

Interesting. The comments and links to them in the left column no longer appear or are readable now that Disqus is operational. Will this be repaired? I really liked that function, but I can do without it in order to be able to edit my comments when I screw up. ;-)

And, this is an edit: Is it possible to move the Disqus Add New Comment box to the bottom of the page so people might actually read previous comments before they ask the same question again?

I understand about the 20 most recent comments area, However the old site under DISQUS when it was Don Trahan, and even still does, have the ability to keep a number count of each blogs total comments still attached to their main list of their most recent videos and blog page. That makes it easier to see if the count has gone up any since a last vist without having to actually go to that particular video/blog page. Also at the old site, the
hour/time of the post and the reply to, information lines are at the top of individual posts beside the name of the commentor. That seems to have a better flow to it, then to have it at the bottom of the comment. Is it possible to format it in that manner at our site as well. These are just
suggestions and excuse me if it seems otherwise. I know you are all working hard to make everything the best it can be. Thank you very much for your efforts. Cheers

LynnF--I don't recall replying to this, but even if I did, I thought of more to write, pertaining to both the "swing with the ball just in the way," and my post of lowing my tempo down on doctor's orders. It seems that they may be both related, or they may be equvalent mental processes to accomplish something similar. What do I mean?

As I reported, I couldn't maintain the "swing as though the ball is just in the way." It worked fine the first time, but not the second or third (maybe not enough time on task to make a definitive judgment). When I slowed my tempo down, it worked fine for the first five holes, but the wheels fell off the bus on #6--I may have begun competing with the other guys and swinging harder. Now,I have two different ways to practice this--and work on the one that feels the most natual. My first guess is that it is going to be the tempo slow down (I play some music), so tempo thoughts are in my DNA (so to speak). Speaking of type A, I'm not generally type A, but I am so in anything I want to excel in. One day at a driving range managed by a friend, he kept bringing me buckets of balls to hit. I hit seven buckets in a couple hours, and they had to carry my clubs to my car. That was before Surge's post against just going out and hitting balls without knowing what basics you are trying to learning while hitting those balls.

First off--you had me in a mild panic. I thought that LynnF and Lynn42 were two different people, and I thought I was writing the wrong name, so I went back and edited each post.

Back to tempo--I took "bacon thin divots" on all fairway woods and irons, even if I wasn't trying to. I don't know how many other elements worked without me knowing it. Lest anyone think I'm a converted "dot's" guy, I'm still a "dot's" learner who learns the dots and then crosses over to the totality of the swing.

I found that using a smaller practice club for indoor practice swings is great for a few reasons. 1. It helps you focus on the golf movement you’re trying to learn. 2nd (and I found out by personal experience) depending on what type of floor you have when practicing your swing i.e. thin commercial carpet glued to a concrete floor vs. carpet over padding. I had an unconscious tendency of not wanting to smack the hard floor with my club during a practice swing. Before you know it, I found that I was bringing my arms in a little bit at impact (chicken winging) in stead of the relaxed extension that needs to occur during a well executed follow through. This slight pulling up of the arms at impact could only been seen on video slow motion, and resulted in obvious miss hits, and the nagging tightness and knots in my shoulder area that had been bothering me for quite a while. Conclusion, make sure you have the proper surface to practice on if your club is going to contact the ground, I bought a used 5x5 mat from the driving range I frequent for $10 bucks, cut it in half to use the side that wasn’t worn out just for this purpose. Hope this helps.

Doc:

I passed your data over to my fitter and he says the material that I use might not be right for you. All your shots might fly to the right using this material even in an R.

However, he says that he does have a shaft for your swing speed that would get your attention.

I've seen guys with just a 230 yard carry get extra distance out of my club so I would still like to see you swing it to see if you can benefit from using this material before I give up having it used to help you get more distance.

The offer for you to come out here at my expense is still open but the best shaft for you might wind up being made from a different material than what is right for me. So the next step is up to you.

On a different issue ... I was down at Salt Creek Golf Club (http://www.saltcreekgc.com/) this past weekend for a long driving competition. The guy with the fastest recorded swing was in the meet. Almost all the contestants had the ball positioned forward off the left toe and not at the instep where Surge says it should go. They all used longer golf shafts than what I use (47" - X stiffness).

So if a person wants to hit the ball long - the way to go is a long shaft positioned off the left toe. Doing that causes a person to hit up on the ball ... just as you recommend. But if you fit them with short shafts you would be costing them a lot of distance - if you recall Surge said to have short irons back in the swing because of the shorter shaft length. I am not sure about your idea of hitting up on irons but hitting up on the driver is the right way to go. But to get the full benefit of the technique takes a longer shaft -- and you still can stay vertical. Several of the long driver guys had very vertical swings with 50" shafts.

One guy was with Aldila and several others were using House of Forged.

A number of these long driver guys had decent swings that still produced plenty distance (shortest was 360 yards - at sea level at 60 degrees). These guys also had very low handicaps and were golfers, not just long distance specialists.

Charlie,

I think I understand. The best drives I've ever hit was when I was thinking smooth even tempo and full T finish and that to me is the 25% reduction in effort for lack of a better word. After I watched the video of Surge swinging through the bag I made the mistake of upping my tempo in an effort to gain distance and lost timing and direction.

You are right, I think when you say the competitive nature kicks in and it's now keeping up with the other guys. With me it's a feeling that just creeps into my swing and I try to muscle up the swing, usually with less than great results. I usually walk a tight line between the two swings. If I get too relaxed trying to keep it smooth and flowing I find I let my left arm break down and wind up who knows where at the top of my backswing. I can control that with firm knees, but it's still a work in progress.

Hope this makes sense to you and doesn't make your hurt...lol. You've had enough pain to deal with. Hope you're feeling better.

I have been using the "Ferris Wheel" image and "feel" like I'm swinging on that path. it works great. But the only time it works consistently for me is when I also set-up to the ball with a "secondary" spine angle! Been doing it for years! When I start to loose the ability to hit the ball where I want it to go, I notice that I've not set up with a "secondary angle".. As soon as I set-up with it I'm back to great ball hitting..

I like the idea of using visual imagery to groove a swing in an inclined plane. This seems to help me with my shorter irons. The problem is that my swing often gets flatter and wider with my driver and fairway woods, hybrids, and longer irons. Any ideas, suggestions.

Lynn, as you experienced by trying to copy it, Surge has a very upbeat or faster tempo than many of us. It is his personality. He talks fast, swings fast, it's his nature. As he said we need to find what individually fits us best. We're all different but can find the combination with practice of the fundementals. We then swing to the beat that fits our pace and gets us the consistency we need.
We're all a work in progress.

Beauty Dick - I'm a bit worried about Greg though, if him & I are on the same wavelength
Club butt over the toe line is a more precise way of viewing it - I like that
The catch in that would be for those of us who haven't shortened our drivers & are choking down on them
As a result the butt would be inside the toe line a bit

I play a lot of knockdown shots with the shorter clubs & go down the grip by varying amounts to do so
As a result I feel my hand position is more universal than the butt position
Happy trails Dick

Hi Lynn42--your statement of left arm breaking down may be the clue to what happened to me on the first hole that the wheels came off the bus. It was a 155 yard over a pond, and I thought I swung just like I did before, this time with a fairway wood. If I had maintained whatever I was doing right, I should have been OK, but I was way short. I can see the possibillity of my left arm breaking down. Something to think about.

Lynn42--another thought/question about tempo. Every now and then, you hear someone say, or read something that someone wrote, and says that if you slow down your tempo, you reduce the chances of reducing lag too soon, increasing your club head speed by maintaining a larger lag. Seems like a valid way of getting more club head speed. Sounds counter-ituitive, but so much of golf is just that.
