Today's video tip is from an email sent to me recently from BB Lyssand, a Surgite from Os, a small town on the southwest coast of Norway. As you will see, BB's message was not so much of a question as it was an admonition to his fellow Surgites not to lose sight of the details of the Peak Performance Golf Swing, even though it is an easy swing to learn. Here's what BB said, in full.
"Hi Surge
I have had your videos for some time and thought I had an understanding of the concepts, and played OK. The swing is simple, right? So you only need to pay attention and practice.Well, our season here in Norway started a few weeks ago and I was pushing my shots 5, sometimes,10 yards wide of target. Thus, I went back to school and noticed that I had missed or forgot many details. This time I really paid attention and am hitting straight, longer shots again, on average, one club difference.
So thanks, Surge...and to everyone-- make sure you really pay attention to the details, you will be rewarded!"
Thanks go to you, BB, for reminding us all that before we can become "feel" players, we need to make sure that we are achieving what I call "technical excellence" in both our pre-swing and swing thoughts. My #1 Surgism says it all: "The setup determines the motion." To put this in context of what BB was saying, you have to have technical excellence in order to become a "feel" player. Isn't that logical? If you aren't setting your body into the right pre-swing position, would you want that to be the feeling you are trying to establish? The same goes for your actual swing. If you aren't turning correctly, if you are swinging deep into the Sacred Burial Ground, or you are not keeping your lower body relatively still during your backswing, then are you developing a swing feel that will be The One you want to emulate? Of course not!
So as we progress this season, let's not lose sight of the details that make PPGS the phenomenal golf swing that it is. If you continually seek technical excellence you will be rewarded with straighter, longer shots that land precisely where you want them to land.
So, if you have purchased my PPGS Swing Series video or my 112-page illustrated Foundations manual, go back to "school" like BB did. You'll find the answers to your swing problems there. And if you haven't bought them yet, do yourself a favor and make the investment. You'll be glad you did.
