I walk the course as often as I can. I highly recommend it. While it's not the continuous walking that physical therapists would like you to do to increase your metabolism, it's still darn good exercise. And Dr. Donohue, who has a health and fitness column in our newspaper, agrees.
In his column he says that walking an 18 hole golf course is the equivalent of walking 5 miles. Like I said, it's not the same thing as walking without stopping, but you can definitely work up a sweat, especially when it's summer in this part of the world. I also think it helps you keep focused and your body loose, ready for the next shot.
Of course, not everybody can walk a whole 18. But there are some good alternatives. Take turns with your partner if you're in a cart. Walk one hole, then ride one hole. Maybe switch off. Or, if you're in a foursome, two can walk and the others ride. Never be afraid to ask your playing partners about walking. Who knows, you might inspire somebody.
Keep it vertical,
