What is it with golf publications? I understand they need to report on the latest swing that promises you an extra 50 yards or gives you the ultimate tip to sink that 30 foot putt. Fine. If that advice helps, try it. But hitting down on the ball? Get real.
Hitting down on the ball means deep divots - a Surge Swing no-no - and it just doesn't make sense.
From the top of the backswing to the finish I call the FUS, the forward upswing. Everything in the swing is focused on the T-Finish. Impact is just a part of the process.
I think this video will help you overcome the 'downswing' ideas and come 'up' with the right answers.
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

Kevin, I think you'll find if you try it that keeping your palms perpendicular to the ground makes it almost impossible to bow the left wrist.
When people say hit down on
When people say hit down on the ball, it simply means the club hasn't bottomed out yet. ÃÂ If the ball position is behind the left shoulder, you will be hitting "down" on it whether you think you are or not. ÃÂ The bottom of the swing arc will be below your forward shoulder. ÃÂ Simple geometry.
Making contact while the club is still slightly descending also increases backspin which is what makes a ball fly. ÃÂ It also helps you stop the ball on the green. ÃÂ The ONLY way to hit UP on a ball is to tee it up. ÃÂ Otherwise you'll blade it or hit the ground first. ÃÂ Simple geometry again. ÃÂ If you're taking a divot after striking the ball, even a thin strip of one, guess what? ÃÂ You just hit DOWN on the ball!
If you're trying to learn how
If you're trying to learn how to do the Swing Surgeon Swing without the benefit of the Foundations Manual and other Instructional Videos, it's like trying to learn surgery by watching episodes of House. These daily tips are just that, tips. Helpful advice to keep us on the right track in learning the swing. At times Surge and/or some of the other Swing Surgeon instructors will do a daily tip from a course or practice tee, as in http://swingsurgeon.com/DailyV... . For actual instruction on how to perform the swing from start to finish, though, get the materials and watch and read and learn.

Don't panic when you see the new video here. I had a moment of confusion on Surge's YouTube site. I thought I saw Paul Wilson on the back deck, but it was just Don with a RED shirt and WHITE pants. For just a moment, I thought we were being invaded :-0
I really don't disagree with
I really don't disagree with too much of that. Mostly that the mitt is on the inside corner of the plate and the club passes through it on the way to the toe line, instead of on the target line as you see it. To hit a mitt on the target line you would have to do one of those low, slow and away takeaways that Don is always preaching about being a bad thing.

Let me get this straight.ÃÂ You want Surge to show you how to hit a bad shot and tear up his arms, shoulders, back, and hips?ÃÂ We don't want Surge to hurt himself.
That would be like a math teacher putting 4+4= 9 on the black board to show the class how not to do math.
Get real.ÃÂ If you want to see how to hit a bad shot, video your own swing and watch it.ÃÂ That should show you what not to do.
We learn best by positive reinforcement, not from watching someone do it wrong.

Palo Alto, Isn't that a long ways from you? Are you taking a few days to go?
My fitting will be the 4th. I'll drive down the 300 miles the night before. and come homeÃÂ after the fitting. And I thought that was long way!
Kelly, Thanks for your
Kelly, Thanks for your sensible comments and explanation of the Tour Striker Training Club. I also like that you mentioned Moe Norman, he was without a doubt recognized by all as one of the purest ball strikers of all generations.ÃÂ There is so much hype with new golf equipment and training devices today. Most product hype, has come from Ad Execs board rooms, in an effort to dupe the dupe-able public, and have little or no actual basis in truth. But we all think it's the latest greatest thing since sliced bread and rush out to buy all the hype. Every year, the new club is soooo much better than last years club. Sure it is! They have to come up with a hype line to sell it, and that's the job of the Ad Dept, not the manufacturer or what the device will actually do. Barnum said it right, there's a sucker born every minute, and they're all just waiting to give you their money. ÃÂ Cheers

RoganM,
RoganM,
You are correct, but I was not referring to silence. My emphasis was on civility. Like you said, "... defend with reason rather than incivility ..." We can always agree to disagree, as the saying goes, without resorting to name-calling or verbal attacks on another's person or character. We can challenge points based on facts without challenging the motivation or character of the opposition. This applies not only to this blog, but in all phases of life. Unfortunately, I also have occasions to make knee-jerk comments, which I instantly regret.
Have a great day and weekend.

Amos,Most of the time it
Amos,
Most of the time it would appear that I am working diligently to eliminate the fairway altogether. LOL
My second shots better be outstanding, and usually they are.
Hey I tried something today I've never tried. After a bad tee shot in a warm up round I was playing I made the statement that I needed to get a 1 iron for tee shots. The guy that I was riding with said "just a minute" and he went to his bag and got out a one iron with a graphite shaft. I told him the shaft probably wasn't stiff enough but I teed up a ball and tried it. It was a pretty big pull hook but went about 275 yards. I asked him if I could try again and try to account for the shaft and I hit one straight down the middle and very high and long. Again in the 275 range. A hole later I hit it for a tee shot and although it had a little draw it was still in the fairway. He said jokingly "I don't know if I ever saw you hit two fairways in a row".
Now I am really thinking more than ever that I need one in my bag. I think if I had one thatÃÂ had a Project X 6.0 shaft like my other irons I would really be able to hit it well.
Long irons are just so much easier for me to hit than anything else.

Which method do you prefer?ÃÂ If it's paul, stick with it.ÃÂ My back won't tolerate rotational whether it's done on grass or the back porch or in a gravel pit.

Sportdork has his mind made up and all of us are not going to confuse him with facts.
He is a bitter little man.
Dick
The course designer where I
The course designer where I play really wasn't very tricky or very smart but he sure liked to encourage a draw. You would think that would work really well for me since that's usually what I hit but when things start going badly those draws can turn into hooks pretty easy. OB right is the theme of the course.
What I mean about DJ is he
What I mean about DJ is he immediately rotates his club 90* with his forearms and then does a shoulder turn all the way up. ÃÂ Yes he pulls his left arm across his chest, as part of that, but it's a huge shoulder turn. ÃÂ The mechanics of it aren't what his dad teaches is all I mean. ÃÂ I don't mean it's wrong either. ÃÂ I think it's more effective if anything. ÃÂ And if you look at the club head position at the top, it's over his heels. ÃÂ Certainly not the toe line. ÃÂ That puts it more on line through his shoulders to the ball position so he doesn't have to change it's direction in the swing.
Surge Nation
Surge Nation
I see the trolls are running amuck again.ÃÂ I am just going to ignore them.ÃÂ They will go away on their own, or the ambulance will take them away.
For anyone who has a question about why we should not hit down on the ball and take a "beaver pelt" for a divot, I will just share this with you.ÃÂ This morning while I was doing a report, I had the golf channel on in the background.ÃÂ One of the commentators read off a long, and I do mean long, list of all those who were not playing in the seniors tournament this week because of back, knee, shoulder, and elbow problems.ÃÂ Try this on for size.ÃÂ Any week you want, look at the regular PGA tour and see how many of them are unable to perform for health reasons.ÃÂ Tiger walked out of a tournament a week ago after only 9 holes because "he was in a great deal of pain."ÃÂ
These guys are not hackers, they are the best in the world.ÃÂ They are true athletes.ÃÂ Playing golf is all most of them have ever done since they were kids.ÃÂ Most of them have never had "regular" jobs like we all have had to work at our whole lives.ÃÂ That should prove to you that a rotational swing and pounding down into the ground to take out the big divot, which looks great on TV, will wreck your whole body.ÃÂ
If this swing ain't for you, fine, just move on.ÃÂ We regulars who have studied Surge's videos and manual come on this site every day to see what Surge's tip is for the day.ÃÂ He does just what we all need him to do.ÃÂ We learn just fine from him on his back porch.ÃÂ If you are trying to learn the Surge Swing, or any other swing, on the cheap by watching a daily video meant to reinforce what "WE" already know, then you are getting just what you deserve.ÃÂ NOTHING.
If you think that you can come along late in life, with bodies which have already been beat up by life and work and make that big swing and take those big divots and not pay for it physically, I have a bridge I want to sell you.
I don't know if all the rain, the storms, or the way the planets are aligned have caused all the trolls to come out at once.ÃÂ Whatever it is, get over it, and go back under your bridges.ÃÂ
Surge and the Surge Nation are not going to change a thing to appease you.

Hey guys,If you only watched
Hey guys,
If you only watched the swings from the link in his name you really didn't see the best of his swings from today. Click over to his site and some of the swings from the Swing 3 video were a thousand times better than from Swing 1 video.
Still not perfect but not bad either and much closer to what he is looking for.
As soon as he takes a couple of those swings from the Swing 3 video and drops into the slot instead of hitting toward the ball from the top he will be off and running.
One is a 355cc and the other
One is a 355cc and the other is 425cc. My old driver that I could hit really well was also 425cc.
The 355cc has a shaft labeled as regular and the 425cc has a shaft that would make a telephone pole look flimsy.
So they are as opposite as they could possibly be and I hit either one equally good at times and equally bad at times.
The R9 has a 44 inch shaft and the KZG has a 43 1/2 inch shaft.
I don't necessarily hit a 1 iron better than my fairway woods. (I have only hit 3 balls in my life with a 1 iron, and that was today).
I hit my fairway woods very well and very straight but I did hit that 1 iron today a little farther than I usually hit my three wood, but I am hitting my irons unusually well right now also. Don't know if that will continue or not.
The best driver I ever had was an R7 with a 425cc head and a Graffalloy blue stiff shaft. I rarely missed a fairway back then. (Of course I also played a lot more and got a lot more practice.
There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that if I had the right driver I would hit it as well as I do my fairway woods. (If I can find what that "right driver" needs to be).

Steve, we have a saying in Australia - "Showbags", as in a showbag that you buy at a show festival or carnival (like the Royal Easter Show), it may look fancy and glossy on the outside but is generally full of crap on the inside!
I have a feeling it's a lot
I have a feeling it's a lot like the other unnamed fellow. He is here to show everyone how smart he is, by belittling and degrading another mans life's work. Some it seems, either cannot or will not, just take their balls and go home. They must destroy the game for everyone else.
after reading all this bs i
after reading all this bs i think i will go out and hit some balls trying to take less divit.ÃÂ i have played for 68 years and love the game and the search.ÃÂ don's tips are always interesting even though i have a tough time doing them at times.ÃÂ my fault not his.ÃÂ i think it is always better to have someone out there with me when i am trying to do something new and i think that that is the only problem there are not enough qualified teachers to give me hands on help with Don's method.ÃÂ Tanks Don for what you are giving to the game that keeps me young and interested.ÃÂ wally
Point 1: The Swing Surgeon
Point 1: The Swing Surgeon Golf Swing is completely different from the swing being taught on that other website. ÃÂ The two swing theories cannot be combined.
Point 2: Paul Wilson is not even a certified PGA teaching professional. ÃÂ He's a Canadian pro. ÃÂ Don Trahan is a PGA Master Professional.
Point 3: As others have mentioned, Paul Wilson is wearing the exact same outfit in every "daily video". ÃÂ I'm not stupid enough to buy his video lessons to prove this point, but it seems a reasonable assumption that his "daily videos" are clips taken from his video series. ÃÂ That being said, anyone who goes to that site is a freaking idiot for paying for any of his videos when they can just watch the accumulated "daily videos" and have them all for free! ÃÂ Surge's daily videos are actually done daily (well, sometimes he records a few a day), and they're always based on bloggers comments and queries. ÃÂ Surge listens to the problems his students are experiencing, and addresses them on the back porch because it's personal and inviting.
Point 4: Your drivel offers nothing constructive. ÃÂ If you don't like Surge's style, why hang around? ÃÂ Surge is who is he is. ÃÂ He isn't going to change. ÃÂ And we don't want him to either for that matter. ÃÂ We LOVE Surge just the way he is!!!
Why don't you people that
Why don't you people that complain about Don being on the back porch buy the videos and you will see how he "nips" the ball from the grass. The cheapest golf instruction you can get.
Most people don't have a clue
Most people don't have a clue how good you really have to be to ever even make it to the top level in any sport.
A guy I know (that isn't even anywhere nearly as good as I am) last year told me that he honestly believed that if he had the time to practice he could be as good as the guys on Tour.
I couldn't help it and I just busted out laughing and told him he had way more time to practice than I did and still couldn't beat me and there is no way I would have the skill to play with those guys no matter how much I practiced.
I figure when you can play the best four golfers at your club with them playing a scramble and you only playing your ball and you can beat them regularly you might have a shot. (And even then you better have the mental game to go with it).
I hope to just hit it
I hope to just hit it straight where I want it. Simple goal, LOL!!!
Keith,
Keith,
What would your thought be if you were skipping a stone on a pond? Do you think about each of the positions and actions in throwing the stone, or do you just do it? All the little things that Surge teaches are to assist us in figuring out what we did wrong, if in fact we did something wrong. Otherwise, there are only three things to know:
(1) Proper set-up position - As Surge says, "The setup determines the motion."
(2) The position at the top of the backswing.
(3) The T-finish.
Everything else just gets in the way on the course. If you go from a proper position 1 to a correct position 2 , the backswing was good. If the setup (position 1) is good, but position 2 is not good, then you need to look at the intermediate points: BUS, in the mitt, up the tree, firm/flat left wrist), limited 70* turn, 3/4 swing.
If you then go from a correct position 2 to proper position 3, everything before has to have been good, including the ball flight. If not, then you need to look at a few things, like the bump, FUS, popping up AFAP, to the T-Finish, recoil, and relax, body square to target, club pointing down aiming line.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend and, please, remember all those who have given so much that we can enjoy our weekends.
Kevin
You only have one option in a
You only have one option in a situation like that. You must go to the Emerald City to see the Wizard. Hopefully he will have some spare brains on hand, for those in need. Then you will fully realize that what you are watching is completely free, so you have NO RIGHT to bitch and whine like a little baby. You will also realize that you have the power to not watch, or turn it off. Not you personally of course, but to those, to whom, it may apply! It ain't rocket science, if you don't like it, then don't watch it. It doesn't get much simpler than that. EGADS!
Hopefully we will get to see
Hopefully we will get to see a little coverage of D.J. today (Sat.) as he is paired with K.J.Choi this morning.ÃÂ Good luck D.J. At least you will get out early before the wind gets up.

Thanks, Dick, my friend...."Semper Fidelis"...
Sounds like a proper driver
Sounds like a proper driver length for you would be shorter than what you are using now and maybe one with a lot of loft. 16-18 degrees is in the range of the old 1 iron. There are driver heads with lofts up to 15 degrees available. Doc would be a good source for info and fitting.
One of the best results for
One of the best results for me in not consiously hitting down is that my swing speed peakÃÂ then happens just past impact and I get evrything moving forwardÃÂ and up to completion. The best results don't happen at the ball with a 'hit' but through the ball with a 'swoosh' upÃÂ to the T finish. As Don says, the down is automatic and free if weÃÂ just get into the correct poition at the top and feel as though we swing up from that point. Again, ifÃÂ I focus my energy on completing my swing, the rest becomes much simpler.
Thanks Surge.

Hi Steve.Your problems with
Hi Steve.
Your problems with the driver may NOT be mental!ÃÂ
I have been using my new club-fitted 7 iron and that thing goes pretty straight even on mis-hitsÃÂ (using impact tape tells the story).ÃÂ ÃÂ I was all over the face with my "custom" fit Pings.
At the initial fitting, When John (my fitter) put me in a club that he thought would be pretty close to my best fit, and I hit that thing, I went "wow."ÃÂ I hit it dead in the sweet spot every time, and the feeling was something I have NEVER had hitting a golf club.ÃÂ ÃÂ
I told him I only hoped he hadn't ruined me, because I want that feeling EVERY time, with EVERY club.
We meet again tomorrow, weather permitting, (yes, the poor guy is working on Memorial Day) and we'll work on getting a bit closer to that pure feel.ÃÂ ÃÂ So I'm thinking it isn't YOU, it's the CLUB!ÃÂ ÃÂ Hope you're able to get fit soon.
If you like the CONTENT of
If you like the CONTENT of Revolution Golf and Paul's lessons and they work for you by all means you should follow it.
If you like the CONTENT of Surge's lessons and it works for you by all means you should follow it.
To compare the two as you have done based on things other than the content makes no sense.
I wouldn't buy something just because it was in a fancy package.
There's a little country school here close to my house. Nothing fancy and two grades are taughtÃÂ by each teacher at the same time.
Then after elementary school those kids go to middle school and high school with the same kids that went to the bigger, fancier school while in elementary school.
Funny thing is that almost every year when the Valedictorian is announced at the high school it is a former student of that little, plain country school.
So I guess the little country school doesn't have much of a wrapper but the content is there.
R2, In regards to the slide
R2, In regards to the slide bar for the Swing Tech. I do not know why for sure, other than perhaps my interest through correspondence with Ralph at Swing Tech, BUT, they sent me one of the new designs without requesting any payment. I do not know if you will be familiar with the names of the parts used, but, the bracket is simply a 20" length of 1&1/2" uni-strut, with a slide-able 1/2" female snap-tight hose fitting being use for the brass tipped aluminum rod receptacle. The snap-tight fitting is attached with a 2"x1&1/2"x3/8" steel plate and a center 1/4" pipe threaded hole to tighten the fitting into. ÃÂ Rather heavy duty, but a clever simple design. I do not know how long you have had yours, but if it is a recent purchase, you may want to inquire directly through their contact link as I did. They may request a payment from me at a later date, but have not as yet.
Mr KenThese short daily
Mr Ken
These short daily videos from the back do exactly what they are intended to do. They break the swing down into segments that the golfer can understand. I enjoy Don's daily videos. They are free. If I need personal attention I call him for a lesson and have been doing this for about 15 years. His fee is only about $300 an hour on a driving range where there is grass. So enjoy the videos or go to one his schools.
Hal
Absolutely right! Every time
Absolutely right! Every time my hands start to roll I have the urge to bow my wrist.
Guess what else?Nobody is
Guess what else?
Nobody is saying that the club isn't still descending on everything but a driver teed up.
Guess what else?
Surge says to keep divots shallow and doesn't have any intention of you trying to have the club head on the upswing as contact is made.
Guess what else?
Even though everyone knows that for the club to get from it's position at the top of the back swing to where the ball is it is going down. What Don is saying is that we shouldn't focus on the "down" but instead focus on swinging up to the finish.
