Finding Your Power Swing

Wed, 03/23/2011 - 00:00 -- Don Trahan

I was looking through your comments on the blog and I came across one of the greatest posts I have ever read. Kevin made it very clear to me that he has a strong understanding of the Surge Swing. I want to share his comments with you because he really hits the nail on the head.

Kevin's explanation of the Surge Swing is so accurate that I had to repeat his comments more than once in the video, just to make sure his great points weren't missed. His knowledge of how to maximize your power is dead on. So, great job Kevin! Keep practicing the things you're doing now and I'm sure you, and all the other Surge swingers, will keep hitting it more solid and straight. Two important keys to shooting those lower scores!

The Surge!

I know GNC has a "reputation" for supplying high quality vitamins, but I do not agree that is always the case. WalMart definitely is not a carrier of high quality vitamins and supplements. Ideally our vitamins should be made from whole food sources. Some brands that are known for this are New Chapter, Garden of Life, Innate Response, and Dr. Mercola's supplements for example. When you take these kinds of vitamins, you never have to worry about feeling sick after taking them for one. You can't say that of synthetic vitamins. And our bodies are actually able to assimilate these vitamins and minerals, and thus we're getting the most bang for our buck so to speak. Our body can't absorb these sythetics, and so we just end up peeing them out, or worse...storing them in our bodies in fat and cells. Thus leading to illness and disease.

This used to be under the Academy (along with the Golf Schools - still there) but is now missing.
Hope it can be restored and that we soon see a fitter located in the UK

Tiptoe is correct....NO SOY, especially for us boys.

The product Don offers on this site looks VERY good. But... Price per serving is _______??

An alternative is a high quality whey protein powder.

bodybuilding.com offers dozens of protiens. Be careful with some of them.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey is high quality at a pretty good price.

Reminder, it's what your body uses that determines value.

Hi raflorian:

I like simple thoughts: Be a kid, and "go skip a rock."

That's all. Your hips, hands, arms will get sequenced and slotted,
and all will be well. Simple.

There is 1 key qualifier : it originates from a slightly laid off position,
which for me this simplifies things even more.

Spot on Robert Meade, Hope the hand is progressing in leaps and bounds.
When I got my first handicap, the biggest club in my bag was a 5W, I could almost make it talk.An elevated green at 100yds, down the shaft face open and I could drop it on the green. Why Oh! why did I change. In Germany black wooden Ping 5W 230-240yds with ease!
My normal colour code with Ping was orange. On my handicap round in a club competition, I was using a borrowed set of Ping with black colour code.
I will try this in a few weeks time [hopefully sooner] Get well soon

Thanks Dragonhead, I wondered why I didn't iether get some additional comments or some expanded thoughts on these observations of what truely gets us staying on the short grass. I have found the reading of Tom Wishons books absolutely fascinating. He again is not recomending we use a five iron on the tee on a par five but if all golfers really see the studies done on what lenghths and lofts are best for them they would take another look at thier current driver if needed and consider an insiders view of what the big brand companies are pushing - we will be surprised what a difference it could make for them. BTW I am buying these books on Amazon.com for savings of 80% off the original costs and in new condition.
Appreciate that it struck a cord with you. Good golfing.

T. I agree whole heartedly with Big D. You're tops! I also refer golfers to the series of lessons with Chris. There are a bunch of great tips within those lessons including the fact that Surge says that the elbow position at the top(some might refer to as the flying right elbow is the key to learning how to get vertical at 12 oclock. Priceless stuff. My other favorites are the series of lessons of Surge with Matt, where the proper stability of the lower body is clearly identified.

Steve, It's 16oz. If you click on the nutrition link at their site it shows 16 servings at 1oz each. Fairly costly. I remember checking it out when it was first advertized and decided it was a little too high for me. I also don't recall for sure, but i seem to remember it actually costing less at their site with the shipping and totals then what it was at swingsurgeon, something to do with the quantity bought and shipping, but i don't recall for sure, so check the total prices at both sites before you buy to be sure. Cheers

Actually, he doesn't. The angle between DJ's thumb and forearm and between the back of his left hand and his forearm do not change in the takeaway, or anywhere except a bit of flex at the transition (inevitable but not an active motion) and after release as he moves into the forward mitt and up the tree. What you're confusing for wrist cock is the speed with which DJ rotates and lifts with his left arm. If you watch the driver video (assuming you've bought it), Surge visibly demonstrates this fact.

Steve, I just logged in as a test, everything was fine. However, about two hrs ago i was having trouble just getting the site to load with my normal desk top short cut. I would click on the link and get the usual can't find or load site message, but when i hit refresh on that page it would load. The same thing would happen when i clicked from one blog to another also, i had to click, get the can't find message, hit refresh and it would load. Finally i went to google typed in swingsurgeon.com and clicked on the google link offered. The site came right up, so i replaced my old shortcut with a new shortcut to that page. It has been working fine ever since. Didn't make any sense to me then and still doesn't, but that's what happened for me. Good luck

What Robert F said not to mention that when straightening the left left it changes the spine angle as well and makes it even more difficult to get over to the left side. Let me ask, at the top of your back swing, take a look at your left knee. Is it still in front of ball or bent inward and towards the ball or even behind it?

Surge, these video lessons have been right on target. Really helping put all the peices together. In harmony with what you said about the need to what "individually is the maximum, under control, in effeciency and consistency we can swing a golf club in terms of power and speed and hit the ball solid and straight"........is the following test from Tom Wishons 'Search for the Perfect Golf Club' book sarting on page 152 concerning finding the right driver:
"Would you like to know which club is ACTUALLY your driver? It's simple. Go to the driving range and create an imaginary fairway in front of you- let's say it's the red flag on the right and the blue flag on the left....Whatever you can use as a referance that's about 40 yards apart. Now start hitting balls.
The longest club that you can use to hit 7 out of 10 balls between those two flags is your driver. It might say "driver" on the bottom, or ..."3 wood," or "5 wood," or even "5 iron".... Whatever club gets you 7 out of 10- THAT CLUB IS YOUR DRIVER- at least in a world where common sense replaces(ego and) wishful thinking."
Tom goes on to say,
"Don't believe me? Just play nine holes someday with that club as your driver and see what happens.........you WILL be surprised." He adds,"...I am a realist. I know most of you won't actually make that club your real driver, which is why I am spending so much time telling you about reducing your driver length and increasing driver loft"
I am planning on doing this little test as soon as my hands allow. For most of us, playing from the short grass works out alot better than the forest, the desert(in Las Vegas where I live) the lake, the condos, the swimming pool, the weeds and all those other adventurous places that we've all ventured while going after that one big drive that felt awesome but left us without a second shot
One more reason to get our common sense fit while getting our clubs fit so we can hit solid and on center the highest percentage of the time.

Hope it helps, raflorian. That feeling...that motion...we can all remember & execute.

There IS benefit from simple swing thoughts.

btw- a video of your swing you may find MOST helpful. Simple feedback.
You can see how your thoughts translate to reality. Very enlightening & simple.

Trusted input can then follow. Some of the people
on this sight are good observers & give good feedback. But if you have the means,
a good instructor would be the call.

It's an art to put an accurate, do-able swing thoughts into words.
Otherwise, we are weighed down by too many thoughts.

Thanks T. I looked on the bag of the protein shake she's been drinking and it is 420 grams for $19. The ProFuse would be 160 grams for $24, so it is a little high. The only thing is that the protein shake has calories that she doesn't want. I told her the best diet is to walk one mile for each 100 calories you consume and then you don't have to worry about any of that stuff.

Edit: Since I can't access the site I don't know who is making comments unless they are someone that I am following on Discus.
The protein in the shakes my wife has been buying is hydrolyzed whey. Don't know how that stacks up against what's in ProFuse.

Edit again: I talked to my son on the phone and he said he was going to order some of the ProFuse. He seems to think that a person needs both hydrolyzed whey and hydrolyzed kosher collagen. He thinks that with the vitamins it isn't a bad deal and would be handy to put in the water he drinks on the course.

Never give up! Never surrender! Golf is war, and we will win or die putting! Ooooooor, like I must do all the time, maybe try just getting back to the basics; GBSAPS. Grip, Ball position, Stance, Alignment, Posture, Swing. Check each one and make sure they are correct. It only takes one thing to be off in our set-up to screw everything else up big-time. Hi, Robert Meade--choosing this post of yours to sent you another wish for a speedy recovery. I'm going home today after 9 nights in a private room. I must be getting used to it because I keep catching myself saying "hotel" instead of "hospital." I actually like the food, and there's plenty of it. The staff members are great. They are teaching me the true meaning of "working in the service of others." They look after me like I'm a family member.

Back to you--I hope that everything went well and that you have your physical therapy schedule all worked out. I'm sure I don't have to remind you to work hard at your PT, because the harder you work (diligently), the faster your recovery will be, you will recover your full range motion (speaking from past experience).

You and I will have to live through the experiences of our friends until we get to join them as players. I'm out at least eight weeks.

Get Heathy!

SURGE:

G-R-E-A-T video today. I think you hit ALL of my personal "mantras" and swing thoughts 100% with this one.

You once said that we should not be "relaxed" over the ball. I like a feeling of "semi-relaxed" or maybe "semi-tense". It is where I feel the CORRECT muscle groups engaged and ready for action and the others are "just going along for the ride" -- until later in the swing when they are needed. This seems to promote a smooth tempo and my best and most accurate swing speed.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

Raflorian, I don't know if this swing thought will help you or not, but it is the one i use. In relationship to the arms, i follow a long ago tip from Lee Trevino, who said, "My swing thought from the top is to put my right elbow into my right front pocket" When i do this in conjunction with the forward bump and slight rearward spine tilt, (timing and tempo is very important), it works great to drop the club into that slight inside approach, and on the toe line. Check out this video on the top of the backswing elbow position and the mention of the slightly being laid off as the down,FUS, begins,@ the 1:50 mark. Also included a couple links to the bump lessons. Good luck

Please remember that while it may be a bit more costly, it is a superior source of protein and vitamins than what you will find in most retail stores. Most of those protein shakes/powders/drinks are made with soy protein, which has many health implications. http://articles.mercola.com/si.... Also, most soy produced in the US is genetically modified. Add that to what's bad about soy. I've realized that spending a little bit more money on quality products has results in improvements in my health, which has resulted in less healthcare expenses too. Just thoughts to consider.

STEVE, I get my vitamins/minerals and suppliments through zero calories or very near zero for some which have very low counts and low cost,Wal-Mart brands. Then i can drink the diet drinks without any calories or also very low, like one or more of the several flavors of Crystal Light. I try to watch the cost of things, being on a fixed income. Generally, the pills are a lot cheaper than the suppliment drinks are.
