Offset Driver Can Help Cure Slice

Tue, 08/13/2013 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

The driver is typically the hardest club to hit in the bag, especially with any sort of consistency. If you tend to hit your drives to the right with a slice, today's video could be exactly what your game needs.

Doc Griffin is going to show you how an offset driver can help alleviate slices. If you'd like to speak with Doc personally about obtaining a driver with offset, click here to send a direct message.

You can also talk to a club fitter near you. Check out a full list of club fitters here.

Keep it vertical!

Lynn,
Let me congratulate you on your first grandchild. I got my first months ago, a boy. Bought him his first set of plastic golf clubs at two months a his second set already. The second set are real clubs, really cool. Haven't given those to him yet. Grand kids are a blessing and a blast.
On the off set deal, Never perfered them personally. Got a set of offset Cleavland Mashies for Cindy several months back. Replaced the shafts and grips. She was unable to hit them at first because they were too hard to align squarely. I told her to use the face and scorelines to align with but still too difficult. I added alignment lines on the top of the hybrid heads to help her and now she hits them great. Simple fix, it was a visual challenge. The offset does help her square up and even hit an occasional draw.

Hi Robert,
When I had my clubfitting with John Dranschak (Surge fitter) I found the same problem with club alignments. I had a set of Taylormades, and when John had me hit some non-offset clubs, I could align them MUCH easier. SO...my irons have very little offset. Just another example of the benefits of getting clubs that fit!
Regarding the general comments about "torque" yesterday, I sense a good deal of torque but from the waist up, NOT in the low back. Do we not get/need this with restriction of the left hip (from holding the kness firm), and without which I cannot seem to hit a good shot to save my soul?

Robert:
Update for you bud - played twlight at Maple Tue. played 17 holes, played last 8 holes even par. Friends are taking Thursday off and playing 36 so I am taking a vacation day and joining them - playing Kensington Metropark, a solid test. When I got home from Maple got email from the club fitter, clubs were ready to ship needed to verify my address. I replied so I figured I would get them Friday, but when I got home today a tall brown box was inside the door (yee-ha). They look sweet - I cannot wait to try them. Will keep Surge Nation posted. Thanks again for your past comments.
Hit em well friend.
Jerry

New sticks built just for you. Very cool Jerry. It may take some time to get use them but you should see potential for improvement in the coming rounds. One thing that may take time is to see how far you hit each club on the average with a normal swing. You may want to do this at the range by first measuring how for to each distance. For example the 150 yard sign may be 145 or 155. Your new irons may very well go different distances than your old sticks. If you have or can borrow a laser from a friend, this would help. Knowing your new distances will help s you play later. Any how have fun and be patient as you adjust.

As usual, this is another one of Doc's videos that is worthless as it sounds like he is at the bottom of a deep well. In other words he is unintelligible. It simply cannot be THAT hard to get Doc a mic that picks up his voice. I'm sure he has some valuable information to pass along.

I have mentioned this problem before as have many others. It is difficult to understand why Doc would not want to make the necessary technical corrections, hold a mic in his hand or something so that we can hear what he is saying. We have no problem with the audio on the vidoes that Surge does.

Not everyone has a professional studio to be able to create videos up to your standard.

I had no problem in understanding everything he said. Why you had to put up a flaming observation is a reflection on yourself. I hope you can over come the negativity and focus on the message given.

Oddly enough I use the same mic as Surge. I had no problem understsnding every word and neither did Miss Vaughan who has aslight hearing loss.

Some folk are never satisfied! After years in the military, shooting and undergoing artillery fire....etc, long before people started wearing 'ear defenders', and I could understand every syllable! For a free video, what did you expect, quadraphonic stereo??? I would hate to play golf with you sunshine, nothing like a nitpicker to play with. Sheeesh!
Doc, Congratulations on the additional grandchild. A great milestone.
Respectfully DH

Doc, I heard you loud and clear, I think the gentleman who was complaining about the sound has a problem with reverberation in your premises, ie the sound bouncing of hard surfaces and echoing slightly, Surge wouldn't have this problem as his mic. is outdoors. Love your freeze pic on the intro, looks like you having some delight on a bowel movement, LOL.

The complainers should get a set of amplified speakers. I'm hi freq hearing impaired and the audio still sounds just fine on my end.

Hummmm. Me thinks you are a wee bit harsh with the Doc. From my perspective his presentation was faultless, clear, precise, timely and just plumb full of GREAT golf information. You really should be thanking him for taking the time to explain the concept of offset, and what it can do for you. Take care and hit 'em straight (using an offset driver :-))! R2

Sehumphrey: Speaking as one with severe hearing loss, and not having a hearing aid, I understand your frustration. If, BIG IF, I did not have external speakers hooked up to my PC, I too would be strugling to hear Doc. However, this is due to my, BIG MY, personal hearing loss and not Doc's responsibility to correct. If you do not have external speakers, please do yourself a favor and get some for only about 20 dollars at your local Walmart. It might just allow you to hear what you have been missing. Please accept this in the spirit of help and not critisism. There are also internal sound quality adjustments, which can be set or re-set in your system itself which may help sufficiently. Just trying to offer helpful suggestions.

Thanks Terry!!

My hearing too is going bye bye. I also have had that constant buzzing in my ears for it seems forever. As I have said jokingly because my eyesight is also fading, "What, I couldn't hear you because I couldn't see and read your lips."
I am becoming my Father which is really scary. Anyhow, I did get speakers and they really help. I also have cheap head phones- just the tiny stick 'em in your ears kind that we can easily plug into the pc. Actually I used neither yesterday when first listening to Doc'e presentation and understood him no problem.

What bothers me most is that there have been several commenters like Sehumphrey who only seem to say something if they want to critic the messenger and not because they care to add to the conversation in a helpful manner. Too, we always add suggestions for the listener to get better speakers and still he admits that this was not the first time he has complained about not hearing Doc? Wow, that's a bit like always slicing your driver and then never changing your swing or driver and then coming back here to seek advice for the slice but then never using that advice. Really?

Prove me wrong by humbly taking the advice from Terry above and then cheerfully thanking him soon. Then we would all respect you.
Dick, where are you buddy? We miss your swatting skills!!

Doc Griffin: Thank you for the excellent information! I just LOVE the offset 12* driver you built me a couple of years ago. Before going to an offset driver I was playing a lot of army golf, always trying to compensate and never having any consistency. Now the majority of my drives are right down the middle. Yes, I occasionally hit a bad shot - who doesn't? lol. But with the PPGS I know what I did wrong and can easily correct the swing fault. Also, congratulations on your first grandson - teach him well!! R2

Paying a bit more attention to that this morning, most of that is in the left leg and HIP, (where I think it probably should be) and NOT so much in the upper back...don't want to spread any misconceptions!

Tina,

Been meaning to tell you how right you are. Your and Surges reminders that we torque against our knees and not our back are spot on. This reminder helps me keep my lower body quiet and have more consistent solid strikes.

Out today for the first time in a week. Only played 8holes due to time allowed, boohoo, boohoo! My wife's comment on finishing: "Very consistent golf"! I had slowed down the back up swing and and off the tee with the driver, never missed a fairway : - ] Good height and distance with accuracy. The 5W off the sodden ground was immaculate. Went exactly, and I mean exactly where it was aimed. Using the item between my ears more, certainly helped. Short iron shots were stunning, going exactly where I aimed them. Being realistic and taking 'one club more' on short iron shots and going down the grip more, paid off big time. On my third shot on a par 5 with the ball in a ripple [like ripples in a lake], with the ball well above my feet. Took out the blonde wooden 5W, down the shaft, allowed for the expected right to left flight and hit it right on target. It left me on a muddy fairway right on the line with the flag. About 40ft or more above the ground on line with the pin were the ends of branches. Being sensible I aimed slightly away from the pin, right down almost onto the metal with a PW and dropped it onto the spot I had aimed for! Easy putt to finish.
It may be the last time we get out until the middle of next week, weather wise.
A quiet lower half and a more measured BUS and it all just seemed to happen. Light at the end of the tunnel for me. Now I should bow my head and admit, it was more the Indian than the arrows : - ( Now to practice some more.
Sorry to hear that you are having hearing as well as eye problems Robert
: - [ I am surprised at how good my vision has been of late. Whereas my wife has been my eyes, even on a longer shot, I can see where the ball goes. My confidence has increased accordingly. Still need glasses for reading and being on the computer. Tiger Balm sorted out my middle finger in quick time a couple of days ago. I couldn't make a fist with it. Now? No problem at all.
And so it goes on. The torture drill helped me slow down and get used to swinging up. I thank Surge every day for introducing me to a body and 'golf course' friendly swing.
Hit it longer, straighter and more consistently in Vegas.
DH smiling and less tetchy ; - )

Good swinging and using the head smartly in NZ. Sounds like you are striking them well DH. Don't feel too bad for my ears and eyes, I exaggerate a bit on their lacking. Mainly need glasses for reading.
Cindy and I will play a rare round with my two lovely daughters tomorrow. Playing a tough narrow track -'Desert Pines'. I'll need straight more than long.
Glad you're seeing light at the end of your tunnel and confidence is high:)
Keep hitting 'em well and wisely in NZ.
Enjoy the rest of your Thursday. We are just now off to bed on Wednesday night.

Hey Doc,

I've been meaning to get into contact with you for some time but things here at the homestead have been keeping me busy. I want to get a couple of your ball caps to wear when I'm out and about.
Those shorts were the killer!!! Anyways, I had no problems with the audio on the video, like always, sounded fine to me.
Congratulations on the newly arrived grandson, mine is five now,and we just celebrated the birth of my first granddaughter a couple of months back.
Matter of Fact, Pop carried pizza over to their place tonight & was rewarded when KennaLee gave me a present down my left arm as I was holding her.
Luckily, when it ran to the floor, it just missed going through my Dr. Shoals mesh sneakers.
Josh continues to watch your house-calls on a regular basis and practices his swing when it's not to hot for him outdoors, chips & putts inside anytime I happen to be watching the golf channel. I'm thinking of getting one of those swing trainers off the site and attaching it to a 4x out in the yard so he can start to groove a swing. He is improving with what he has, but like most youngsters, moves all over the place and that causes him to chop down at the ball and hit way behind it. I'm thinking that the swing trainer will help him get the feeling of staying stable over the ball.
I've been working a lot on my golf swing on that course that is five inches wide and am looking forward to the time I can take out for a run.
So, congratulations on the new arrival & your birthday again. My best to Miss
Vaughan & the family.

I dunno,Doc, would it be a bad thing to be mistaken as a Top 100 Master
Fitter??? But I see your point, perhaps I'll just go and order a couple from the
Alpha site and then when someone asks me about my choice of clubs & attire
I can give you a shameless shout-out,my friend!
