My Driver Fitting Session with Doc

Sat, 01/09/2016 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

My son DJ and I recently went to see Doc Griffin for a club fitting session. Over the next week or so, I'll be sharing details from DJ's club fitting, which included working on the driver, fairway woods, and irons.

After DJ's session was over, I got on the launch monitor and started hitting some drives. I haven't been happy with my ball flight, so I figured I'd see what Doc had to say. After just a few drives, we found some interesting data!

Check out the video above to see what changes I'll be making to my driver.

Keep it vertical!

Doc Griffin fitted me with new irons a while ago, which have been very successful so I have just asked him to make up a Driver for me with the same Accra shaft. It's on its way so I am looking forward to a delayed Christmas present from myself!

In this video you suggested seeing a club fitter for proper shaft length etc. You used to (and may still do ) recommend a shorter driver length for your Vertical Swing. A club fitter may not recognize a Vertical swing and suggest a longer length. Also what are your thoughts about simply chocking up on a regular length driver.
Thank you,
Conrad Conant

Choking is fine. To find proper length, put some face tape or duct tape or something that will show marks when hitting a ball. Find the length where you consistently hit the ball in the same spot on the face. Does not matter where just in the same general spot. This would be the maximum length you should play. A good Fitter does this.

I thought this was a very insightful video with the change in clubhead speed with Don's shaft/driver. I was usually about 90- 95 mph but I can tell I've slowed down too. I got my latest driver/shaft combo in the fall of 2014 after I was fitted by my PGA pro friend for my irons earlier in the year He explained something to me that I thought was interesting. He said he likes to put his senior golfers or any golfer really, in the most flexible shaft they can control. He likes to talk about the 'buggy whip' effect of the clubhead just before it contacts the ball. I know he puts a lot more input into his fitting than just that but he thinks this item is quite important. As Don and Doc have always taught, I'm always more concerned about hitting the ball as close to the center of the clubface as I can. But....I really like the whipping action of the softer shaft. A good balanced PPGS.swiing will get me out there and far enough and in the fairway. I do plan on getting my clubhead speed checked this winter. Kind of curious now.
