Ball Position And Spine Angle

Thu, 03/10/2011 - 16:48 -- Don Trahan

I'€™ve been talking about ball position lately because DJ discovered his was too far forward on the tee. He moved it back and began hitting the ball a lot better. Isaac was wondering what I thought of having just one ball position, as some instructors teach. Well, Isaac, here i€™s your answer.

It's really all about spine angle. I teach the ball should be dead center for wedges through 7 iron. Your spine angle remains steady through impact with those clubs.

As we get to longer clubs, I do teach moving the ball slightly forward for that very same reason. But the key word is "œslightly."€ We never go beyond inside the left heel for a driver.

With the Surge Swing, we want to keep the body quiet. In all my years of teaching, I have found that moving the ball slightly forward for the longer, less lofted clubs keeps the spine €œquiet.€

The Surge!

It makes sence to position the ball alittle forward for the longer clubs but Surge I have a question that maybe you can answer for me, I had polio when I was a child that left my left leg 2 inches shorter than my right, I tend to hit the ball to the right alot and I know your suppose to line the ball differently for uphill shots and downhill shots, my question is would you have me line the ball up differently to compensate for this? Have you ever run across something like this in your many years of teaching? Thank You MikeD

Mike, I'm an occupational therapist so please indulge me as I reply to you without an answer to your question of Surge. Do any of your left shoes happen to have a built-up sole? It might be something seriously worth considering. I know it's not an inexpensive thing to do, but could provide tremendous relief to you on so many levels (not least of all evening you up to swing optimally and pain free). Also, I'd like to recommend seeing a chiropractor. They may be able to do a little something to adjust the discrepancy between your legs. Just some suggestions. Regardless, happy golfing!

It may be that your email address was not included in those we got when we transitioned to this new website, or possibly that your ISP is blocking the emails/declaring them spam. First I'd recommend going to the Register tab at the top and signing up directly with our new site. Second, I'd recommend you check your spam folder to make sure our emails aren't landing there, as well as take a moment to add @swingsurgeon.com to your list of acceptable domains. Hopefully you'll find Surge and his daily emails in your inbox before you know it!

Dear Don

Happy Christmas to you and your family and everyone at swing surgeon.

A couple of years ago Sonia and I had a lesson with you in Florida.

I was mis aligned and overswinging.

I have worked hard to improve these and other errors using mainly your manual. I saw no real improvement. I still when I had everything in my mind correct including the bump hit weak shots right or was inaccurate etc.

By chance I saw one of your videos about staying behind the ball and tried this with again no improvement.

I have now at long last found out the problem and have started to play some great golf. What I thought was staying behind the ball wasn't and in fact I had moved well forward even when I was convinced I had stayed behind.

I hope this may help someone.

Regards

John
