Cactus Drill for Proper Elbow Position

Fri, 04/22/2011 - 17:10 -- Don Trahan

Today's lesson is about elbow position. We want our elbows to be parallel to the ground at the top of our backswing and forward upswing.

Some coaches teach that you should flare your right elbow in the backswing (for a right-handed golfer). This will only cause you to get deep into the sacred burial ground. Other teachers say you need to keep your elbows close together as if you are trying to hold a ball in between your elbows throughout the swing. In the Surge Swing, we want the elbow position to form an equilateral triangle.

A good drill I use to demonstrate where your elbow position should be is the cactus drill. Watch the video to see my description of the drill. You'll find it shows you just where you need to be in a matter of seconds.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Personelly I would use my game as a guide and not swing speed, I would take less swing speed and more consistency, than some long drives with more erratic play any time.
There was a daily video on this topic and how to increase distance I think, basically though it was to increase speed at impact and through to the tee finish.
Do a search.

I guess it was really only 4/5's of a whole hole since I got tired at quit at 8 feet. But it was 100% of a hole.

Keith, I subscribe to the email feeds, but I'm good at filtering what I actually read. Any of a group of names mentioned in the "X in reply to Y" note at the top and I simply delete that one and move on. Cleared 100 messages in about 10 minutes this morning.

Robert: I agree. The SwingRite is a easy-to-use training aid and works, plain and simple! I love mine and never leave home without it. It is so easy to "regroove" your swing if something is not clicking (no pun intended). lol Too bad they don't have one with a "lockable" clubhead on it - think about the possibilities. R2

Surge Nation

I had a great round today, and it sounds like some of you did too.

I played 18 in a 1 man scramble format pitting the Bridge Stone e6 against the Titleist Pro V1. Where ever the best shot landed I would hit both balls from that spot. I had a great time.

The first decision I came to was that either worked better for me than the Pinnacle I have been using.

I found the Pro V1 went a little further for me, but the e6 felt better with my irons and wedges. I think I could be happy with either over all.

Dad will have to find his own Bridge Stones for a while. I only had a few of them. I am going to build up a little collection of them. I think I will play the Pro V1 for a little while since I have a couple hundred of them in egg crates.

Just as I was finishing the round, my loving wife called to let me know she would be working late to finish a file that had to be turned in before she could leave.

With that information, I decided to go play 9 more. I only used the Pro V1 for those 9 holes.

It went well enough for me to know that dad is in trouble when I get a hold of him again.

We had 3 twisters about 15 minutes south of us this evening. I have not seen the damage or injury reports yet. They also had baseball sized hail according to the local weather guy.

Please keep those folks in your prayers.

27 holes of golf this afternoon.

I love you Surge.

Marshal Tucker is definitely a necessary step in the progression to full blooded redneck. When you get to stage four you will stand and salute when A Country Boy Can Survive by Hank Jr. is played.

We don't have that sort of homeowners association. We still believe that we bought the land and worked our butt off to pay for it and we ought to be able to do what we want on our land. It would kind of be open season on anyone trying to take our freedom away from us.
We do make a little homemade wine and whiskey and have our version of a homeowners association barbecue.

That's disheartening for all of us when it happens, and it happens to pretty much all of us from time to time. Keep at it. I've been doing this more than 20 years and I still hit those on more occasions than I care to think about.

Robert Meade:

That is specially true on the geometry of some holes. On my home course we have one hole with a "trangular" fairway. A straight line down the right side, widens out a lot to the right.
Trees overhang the left side though, so most people favor the wide open right side.

I have used my GPS rangefinder on several occasinos to verify that my 190 yds drive down the left side is accually closer to the green than the typical 240-250 yard drvie from the whites (3rd tees). Granted, I am playing the from the yellows (2nd tees), but it is only about a 10 yard difference.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

Aghhh!! The Food Network is in full swing. I must contribute.

I just got home from The Legion Hall where I spent my usual Friday night in the kitchen. I serve the best steak dinner in Anchorage and probably in the entire state of Alaska! The small Ribeyes are only 16 ounces and the small New Yorks are only 14.5 ounces the standard cuts are something that I call the Commanders Cut. Usually weighs in at 22 to 23 ounces and 1.5 to 2 inches thick. Price: $15.00 per person and includes a baked potato just slightly smaller than a watermelon, veggies, salad, bread and dessert. Nobody is allowed to leave hungry! LOL

BTW Thanks Steve for the discussion on backswing in the past couple of days. It really helped me to eliminate alot of unnecessary movement, and my power slice with the irons disappeared.

One thing I know about us folks on here is that we can do food.

I have never had a bad meal in a Legion hall, a church, or a Mason's lodge.

But, as I tell Kelly Jo, you can't use me as a measure about what good food is. Heck, I like "C rats." If food don't eat me first, I like it.

We need to do a Surge tourney up in your neck of the woods and all come over to the Legion Hall and tie on the feed bag.

Hi Phil, Still am! I had a lesson yesterday and was shocked to find out I am getting in the SBG by over using the wrists to get to the toeline thus flinging the club well laid off. Also still not using enough hip in the start of the down swing to get the club inside. So I suppose as Surge says equal and opposite reactions! I fling the club in there so I have to fling it back out causing a out to in path, also the hip turn has a massive impact too. I have been putting it more into practice and it is slowly coming good I hope. Slow motion and you can have the idea swing so it is in there what I need to do but putting a swing in motion consistently is another matter! It will come I am positive about that.
Cheers

The Club Fix at Strawberry Farms, (Irvine) CA, one of Golf Digest top 100 fitters. It is nice to have a set of clubs that are 4 degrees apart for sure (good distance between clubs), right flex for me, right lie angles, and when I swing now, with the irons the ball goes straight with the Surge swing (maybe too high for my playing partners to see). I am still learning, but I have dropped 4-8 strokes per round (still need to work on putting). All in all, improving confidence.

At the risk of alienating many regular followers of this site I must comment that the story yesterday about the young Marine at the driving range just doesn't ring true. I was touched by this story like many of you, but after some thought, it struck me. Why would a young man who was never much of a golfer prior to losing his leg be wasting his time trying to learn how to swing a golf club one-legged when he was being fitted for a prosthesis the next day? It makes no sense. Sorry guys but I had to bring it up.

Hi Dan,

It's from the same show. Dan Rowan was the straight guy and Dick Martin would say a bunch of inane stuff to get a laugh. They were pretty funny for their time, but would probably be considered too tame to be entertaining today. Anyway, I'm not quite sure what a "bippy" is. LOL

I might take you up on that.

My new son in law has a construction company. When we buy a home, I am going to guilt him into helping me build a shelter. It will go something like this. You know we sure would like to have a shelter here so that if the grandkids are over here when a storm hits, we will have a place to keep them safe.

I don't play in the dirt much, but I do like me some trees. Guess that is why I own a chain saw.

My question to all of you out there is this. Anyone else noticed their swing speed has gone down with Don's method? I puchased a Taylor made super tri last Sept (on sale) from a nice shop with about an hour of fitting. My driver swing speed was in the 96-102mph range. He prescribed a 55 gram S flex Fuji Motore F1 TP (premium price that he sold me for the stock price). I worked all winter on my new swing at his range, deflecting all the little smirks from other players. I am in great shape, have hit over a 1000 balls working on this, and yesterday, got on that same swing machine with the same guy, and my max driver swings were 92mph? Just for kicks I went back and hit 5 drivers with my old (longer, in the sacred burial ground swing) and hit 3 at 98, one at 99, and the other at 96.?? My driver is shorter this spring on my regular course, same Bridgestone RXS ball, and my irons seems as long if not longer?? HELP.

It is not only for the surge swing that I review other sites/sources, it is about different types of tees, different styles of balls, training aids, putter tips, many things, not just the swing style. No single person has 100% of the answers for 100% of the people. I still intend to try to perfect the Surge Swing after seeing my older playing friends with so many back problems, I am ok with straighter vs longer at the moment. Got fitted two weeks ago and clubs have now got shafts that are right for me....really nice feel to take time, follow back to the tree with smooth rhythm, and work on the follow through still, and have the ball go straight forward (and longer too). Lot to learn.

Glad to see DJ had a good day. I to had a Good Friday ! Videod swing yesterday and compared it with the manual positions and DJs slow motion video and all angles match. I sway a little more in back swing so today widened knees and shot 9 under my handicap of 16. Played on Wednesday and lost 6 balls, not due to army golf but by hitting driver to long for course and going OOB so today held back on everything but the par 5 by using 5 wood instead of driver and playing for position. 3Birdies & 6 Pars to course, 42 Points, 80 strokes, The competition was Bogey and ended up +5 could be a winner but definately a handicap cut I should think. Stableford on Monday Medal Tuesday Lets see if I can do it again,
Any doubters with the surge swing stay with it, listen and learn it works but Rome wasnt built in a Day. Ive been following for 18 months and have learnt so much not only from Don but also from the Doc and have taken to reshafting my own woods to help my game. Thanks for the confidence and keep going DJ , lets see a great finish this weekend.
