Cactus Drill for Proper Elbow Position

Fri, 04/22/2011 - 17:10 -- Don Trahan

Today's lesson is about elbow position. We want our elbows to be parallel to the ground at the top of our backswing and forward upswing.

Some coaches teach that you should flare your right elbow in the backswing (for a right-handed golfer). This will only cause you to get deep into the sacred burial ground. Other teachers say you need to keep your elbows close together as if you are trying to hold a ball in between your elbows throughout the swing. In the Surge Swing, we want the elbow position to form an equilateral triangle.

A good drill I use to demonstrate where your elbow position should be is the cactus drill. Watch the video to see my description of the drill. You'll find it shows you just where you need to be in a matter of seconds.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

That right there is funny.

"Vegetarian" is an old Indian word which means "Lousy hunter."

You better get there in a hurry pal. I can smell food cooking from a hundred miles out.

Is it soup yet?

I know what you mean. In Florida the water table is so high that if you kick a rock over, the bottom is wet.

I don't drive a lifted truck either. They are useless as work trucks. Most people who drive them never even take them off road anyway. Just drug store cowboys.

Yes, that counts. I hereby knight you as an honorary redneck.

Just let it out girl, you will explode if you hold it in too long.

You are among friends here,

One thing that Steve reminded me of the other day was ALLOWING (emphasized) the club to drop inside as you do the bump, it feels a bit funny at the start (feels sort of like how I would imagine Jim Furyk's swing feels, but on viewing my practice videos its nowhere near a severe and the club is dropping nicely into the slot)
Good luck mate and keep us posted

Amos,
Sounds like Tin Cup.
"I'm not going short of those trees or around those trees, I going over those trees.........With a little draw!"

Had a shot just like that today from the fairway on a par 5. I told my wife I didn't know if I wanted to hit a 3 wood slice around the left side or a 3 wood draw around the right side. Then all of the sudden it dawned on me...Heck I think I can get my three wood up quick enough to go right over the top of those trees.......With a little draw! LOL

DJ was a little longer and very close to parallel in the driver swing. He and Don would probably say that it was longer than optimum for the best chance at consistency.
Hard to tell from the angle about wrist hinge and I doubt if any wrist hinge was intentional and was probably just the combination of the bump starting before the top of the back swing and the continuation of the back swing creating some hinge. Then even more hinge would naturally be created by force from the start of the forward swing. This is different from intentional wrist cock, which Doc has explained so many times that his fingers probably start typing it when he wakes up at night.
Keep in mind also that DJ and anybody else can work on all of the proper fundamentals on the range in practice but swings on the course during play will vary from those basics. This is true of everyone that ever swung a golf club. The pros never usually get too far from those basics but if looked at closely enough almost every swing will have some differences. Most of us will vary from those basics even more while playing so the best any of us can do is to practice the basic fundamentals and hope we don't stray too far from them as we are playing.
A young, flexible athlete like DJ would probably always have a tendency to get more parallel than they desire without even knowing it. I guess one advantage to getting older is that it becomes a strain to get to parallel.
John Daily tells the joke that his Godson told him he would really be a good senior player because it would limit him to right at parallel.

My driver swing speed has similarly slowed down by about 5 mph (99 to 94). Buy you know what? I really don't care because I hit it so much straighter now and more solidly. That combination means that I am usually at least as close to the hole if not closer than before and with better lies.

The game is so much more satisfying when you know where the ball is going to go.

Dick,
There you go again talking about running Dad off. Still trying to drown the pigeon.
Do you have a storm shelter?
I got to thinking about it a few years ago and went out the next morning and got a pick and shovel and started digging. Dug a hole 16 feet long , 10 feet wide, and 8 feet deep. I intended to go 10 feet deep but hit solid rock at 6 feet and got tired by the time I got to 8 feet and decided that was enough. Then poured concrete floor and walls and ran heavy angle steel beams across the top and poured 8 inches of concrete on that. Should work for a tornado or an atomic bomb. LOL

P.S. You should have seen the neighbors coming over to look at what everyone called "that hole" as I was digging it. Ha ha!

Steve - clarification -- he was my landlord for four years. I have no idea how long he drove Merle Haggard's bus. His dad played with Merle Haggard's band. Or something. It might have all been BS.

I was just watching the video on the elbows. I have never seen anything on video that tells or shows how long your are suppose keep you eyes on the ball during the swing. In other means not moving your head or your eyes. Thank you Gerald Wilkinson geraldw@tampabay.rr.com

Thank you my friend. Maybe we will get a chance to play a round some day. Once I get settled in out here, I want to do some traveling. You are not that far from OKC.

I am much more concerned with the opinions of my friends on here than I am about some little sniper hiding in the trees taking pot shots. He can't hurt me, or my feelings.

Don't worry Roy, there ain't no quit in this old cowboy. I been kicked harder than that by a woman in a bar fight.

Not to contradict but we do not have "flying right elbows". We have a seperation from our bodies with our arms but the elbows form an equilateral triangle. A "flying elbow" would have the right elbow up and parrallel with the right shoulder.

Coach

You are in Ohio, right?

We would take it. We are 6"-8" below average for the year.

When it comes, it will come all at once like it did last summer. It would rain for 3 or 4 days straight. I saw Noah crossing Highway 9.

Weather guys are calling for the evening storms to cover the same area as last night. I hope those folks down there don't get hit hard again tonight.

Check how freely you're swinging your arms. My swing speed is about the same (averaged 105 when I had it checked last week) as before I switched. It took some time to get used to the feeling of generating speed with a free, relaxed whip of the arms rather than with my shoulders like in the rotational swing, but it works. Also check if maybe the problem is that you're not timing your release right. You may be generating as much club head speed, but not in the hitting zone.

And, as Jim says below, that difference may be 10-15 yards on your best shots, but WHERE were those shots going before and after the switch to the Surge Swing?

I hear you, I love to eat also. That's why I was almost 100lbs over weight. I'm kind of in a little lay off lull now, since the mini family reunion past weekend, but still holding at 215, from the 280. I'm planning/hoping on another 25 more yet for my target weight. It's amazing how much loosing 65lbs effects your swing also. One would think it would make it easier to swing properly, but that isn't necessarily so. At least not in my case. Everything, just seems to be a little off or different, in regard to timing, tempo, balance, etc. I'm sure it will all balance out eventually, once this stupid weather ever allows play and practice. Right now, the rain has stopped, but radar shows another heavy wave coming around 3-4pm which is about 15min or so. Temp is finally up, around 65, but rain and more rain coming. At least I have the golf channel and shot tracker on pga.com. DJ just went off #8, 300yds in the fairway and is holding at -7. I would love to see him win this thing.

Keith Kent,
Good morning from the west coast(US), one thing you can do is go on Disqus'dashboard' and add which ever commentors you especially want to kepp up with and read resonsesand comments on your DISQUS platform when you're short on time. Otherwise you can read the comments on the left (in the geeen strip) -they are the latest. I sometimes just speed read until I come across something that "catches my eye". I do try to read most of the comments but it is challenging I know. Joining the Inner Circle is another avenue, especially if you perfer comments that stay on point and stick to mostly golf. Good luck and I hope these ideas help.

Dick: If your new home doesn't have a shelter, call me (Doc has my number) and I'll drive out and help you dig a hole. I like to play in the dirt, and ever since I started using the Surge swing, I don't get to play in it anymore. lol Hit 'em straight! R2

Surge Nation

We are getting our first rain at my place in a couple of months. We need it. I just checked the radar and it doesn't look like we are going to get very much. The storms seem to be staying south of us.

I am going to hit the rack. I have a long day planned tomorrow and I want to sneak in some range time, maybe even a round if it ain't packed. We will see.

Hope everyone has a great day.

I appreciate you guys knocking the trolls off my back today.

Thanks Surge for that very clear reminder of the cactus drill and finding our place in space.
Right now you are in a great place with your son and he is playing great. What I noticed is how sharp he is around the greens. Up and down from greenside bunkers or just off the green. Chipping it close and making great par saves while taking advantage of 4 birdie opportunities Friday. His newest new putter is on target. 4,5 and 6 foot putts are all going in!
Saturday should bring more of the same. Come on DJ!!

Amen to that Phil, it's so easy to become stuck between the two, in that never, never, land. As in never, never, make a good swing. I've been there and probably still have a bit of the problem.
