Distance From Ball Guidelines

Thu, 12/06/2012 - 10:00 -- Don Trahan

I've published a lot of daily videos over the years and nearly all of them are available in our archives. Don't forget that whenever you have a question, there's a search bar that will scan hundreds of daily videos about all topics we discuss here on the blog. But, sometimes it's good to restate some important aspects of the Peak Performance Golf Swing

I received a question from Daniel L. about hand position and ball position in the setup. So, I'm going to try and provide you all with some general guidelines that you can easily remember the next time you're on a golf course.
Hello Surge,
Still working hard to get things together...My question is this: Should the hands now be on the toe line or should they be stretched out below your eyes or should they be beyond the toe line below your nose or cheek? In other words, how far away from the ball should you be?
I have covered this question in a lot of daily videos and even more in depth in the product videos and manuals. But, for those who are new or have forgotten, let's go over this again.

When I walk into the golf ball, I take my setup and utilize the accordion effect with my 30 degree spine angle tilt. The top thumb of my forward hand will be in line directly under my chin to the nose. This is somewhat of a variable though because we all have different types of bodies. But, wherever you're standing you should have "athetically ready" posture.

From that position, your arms should be hanging relatively straight down. If you grip the club with your arms hanging in that spot, that's where you want to be. If you look down towards the ground by your toe line, both of your hands should be directly inside it. If you start getting your hands way out from your toe line, it means you're reaching. You'll be able to feel this because your shoulders are going to get pulled down as well.

The key is getting into an athletically ready position. While you're in that stance, you'll need to take note of your natural arm hang. That is where your arms should basically stay when you grip the club.

Naturally, you need to figure out for yourself what feels most comfortable. Yet, if you start reaching and you start to feel pulling in your back and across your shoulders and neck with your chest being pulled inward, you're really reaching. If your hands are anywhere close to touching your knees then they're too close to your body.

Try doing the same thing with every club in the bag and you're going to find that you address the ball much more consistently. Obviously your distance away from the ball will increase due to the length of the club you're using, but your arm hang position should not change.

Keep it vertical!

Surge,
It was probably inadvertant, but the top you wore had dark colored stripes downthe outside of your arms, down the sides from arm pit to waist and around your waist. Please review your video.
Those lines dramatize your arm, spine and waist angles perfectly. The visual effect was stunning and educational. I noticed the relationship between those jacket-body lines to your toe and aiming lines. That was a lesson in itself.
What also comes through is your sincerity when talking about your system.
Best Regards, John Baiocco

I just wanted to echo what John Baiocco said. The visual effect on the lines down your arms made the correct hand and arm position easy to see. Nice video today.
Thanks Don,

This video was very worthwhile, thanks Surge. The comments on the lines on your jacket were a great reminder of the angle of the body parts.
You gave more than one checking method. This will help a lot. Double checking using one or all of those tips mentioned will allow us to choose which one suits our individual set up procedures. Off to check them out now before other things distract me.
I noticed that the toe of the club you were demonstrating with was quite high at address. PS. Is the hat you were wearing an Australian Akubra hat?

Finding the right distance from the ball is something I struggled with in my first year of learning this swing. I was one of those who was just lifting the club straight up & using an arms only swing. This tended to draw me closer & closer to the ball to the point where I started shanking all the time & it was driving me nuts. Once I realised that we actually need to make a 70* turn & ever so slightly reach for the ball, things got much better. If we don't have the right distance from the ball our natural arm rotation is never going to return to the ball square
On a completly different subject on my ongoing search for eternal youth & a pain free life. I have decided to give up on the eternal youth part, as I think I might have left it too late. [physicaly not mentally ] ; ) On the pain free side I am looking at Diatomaceous earth. Has anyone here tried it out, a & if so, how was it ??

Russty,
You got my attention because as many on this blog am always on the look out for natural pain relief. Just looked at this product. Looks like it is mainly used as a healthier pesticide and even in the feed for farm animals to eliminate parasites and such. How is it used to help our pain. The only connection I saw is the parasite elimination which is something that can cause physical problems and lead to pain in humans among other bad diseases. So do tell....... about the pain reference please.

Russty Kiwi,
Do yourself a favour before you settle on earthworks. Go to this website: www.coconut-oil-central.com
Make sure that you check out the A-Z list of things it cures as well as it's benefit for arthritic conditions.
I have been using it for a variety of things and swear by it.
If you are further interested after researching it, you can buy it at your local health shop. If there is not one near you, then go to this site:
www.zenian.co.nz They are in New Plymouth. If unable to get any [only if you decide to, of course], they will have it delivered to you.
We would not be without it at home. DH in windy wgtn.

Looks like good stuff that coconut oil DH. Much more user friendly than fosil dirt. I have heard of the health benefits of coconut milk before, but not so much the oil, & will give it a go for sure. I think the fosil dirt might be good for a clean out now & then. Thanks from a windy, but no tornado's today, Wellsford

I can confirm that with everything I have used it for, it has more than lived up to expectations. Great on skin, especially, my wrinkled old paws and arms are all the better for it hahaha! Get your wife to use it on her hair.Put some on an hour or more before a shower and she will never stop thanking you. Forget hair conditioner. A tiny bit of it goes a long, long way. I use it for that purpose about every 3-5 days too. Cures ear infections, athletes foot, foot odour. On joints etc prior and post exercise it is also excellent. Immune system booster, energy booster.........the list is endless.
Used to love the old Harry Belafonte song, "Coconut a woman, is calling out and every day you can hear her shout.....etc" Little did I know then hahaha. Have a great weekend. Off to watch the Aussie Open. DH

I am actually really really getting deeply into the clean eating and supplementing lifestyle more so now and in the future. What I am presently doing and what I have planned for the coming months may seem extreme for many so that is why I haven't talked about it too much here. However, sense you are interested and some may be looking to I will share a bit of it now. I have been doing lots of studying about two important subjects for health. One is making sure our bodies are alkaline and not acidic. Ideal is 7.4 PH. I am one who agrees that what we eat makes a lot of difference. Two, I am extremely interested in anti-inflammatory diets also. It has been said we are what we eat. I have already made some major changes in my diet and have seen some improvements in the way I feel. Now keep in mind I have been eating a mostly organic diet for 10 years now and have been one for excersise and healthy lifestyle for about 25 years. I have maintained a weight of about 180-185 pounds for those 25 years down from a once chubbier 205. At 5'11" I feel that's about right. Now I am taking things to the next level. I hope. I'd be happy to share even more details with you if your interested. I know this can be a touchy subject too. When you ask anyone to cut back on their sugar, alcohol and cheese along with most processed foods and then ask them to make vegies 85% of the diet that scares most away! LOL.
But in spite of my progress I plan on doing an intense detox/cleanse after Christmas and the I will be on a strict alkaline/anti-inflammatory diet until I find the right balance and formula that helps me most.
Let me know if you would like to know more.
BTW My motivation is almost 100% because of a desire to reduce inflammation and pain as naturally as possible. (along with multiple additional benefits like being able to play golf)

Robert Meade,
Have had no anti-inflammatory drugs for years, after being on them for decades. My diet contains what my Chinese wife feeds me on. Suffice it to say, that most of it is steamed/boiled or stir fried before/after, dependent on what it is. Then veges are in profusion. Some veges I used to hate, I am now munching away at with relish,ie, pumpkin, broccoli, and spinach to name but three. Fruit from morning to night bananas, oranges and apples for starters. Nuts for breakfast with my porridge, usually, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds for starters. Never felt better. Then there is the coconut oil, which cures just about anything.
You keep on keeping fit Robert, by whatever means you employ. Coconut oil externally and internally MUST be on your list in my very humble opinion. DH Oooops! lunchtime, whole meal pancakes with lean sliced pork, potato and onions, yeeeha!

Ok DH, now I want to be your drop over for meals neighbor.
And Robert, I would love to hear about your anti-inflammation success, I am tired of the glucosamine and advil. (Some is for a knee with no cartilage, replacement after I lose about 20 more lbs.)
Now, how much coconut oil do I ingest at one time?

Dragonhead's picture

Submitted by Dragonhead on

LeedNC. Check the websites I mentioned. The main one will tell you what you want to know with regard to ingesting amounts. This is dependent on what you wish to treat. From what I remember it will be a couple of table spoonfuls each time. Remember that coconut oil looks like lard fat in it's normal form. I use a small cup and put the oil into it. Then I put that cup into a small bowl with some hot water in it. After a short time it will resemble oil. The site will advise you of the best way to apply it. For instance it can be sprinkled on salads or added to stews or other foods. So there are ways to administer it other than taking spoonfuls.
It also if you check, helps to reduce weight! Though it is a fat itself, it has the unusual quality of not allowing other fats to accumulate around the usual places. It has been used in India for a couple of thousand years, and is known as Magic Oil! I have not taken it internally, I only use it at the moment externally. I would not hesitate to use it when the time comes. One of my daughters is having a hard time at the moment with 'acid re-flux'! I sent her an email immediately. Coconut oil cures that too!
Good luck and I hope that you are soon back to good health.
Hope that you are able in the future able to walk the hallowed turf and hit them long and straight. DH in VERY wet Wellington NZ It is our Summer, please someone explain, why we have just had hailstone? hahaha. Global warming at it's very best.

Success has been slow coming as I do not use any drugs other than motrin and advil. I actually did the glucosamine and chondroitin with msm for several years and did not appreciate any measurable relief. Was told about Flexcin by one of our fellow bloggers here and have found it to be noticably helpful. It has something called cm8 that makes the difference.
http://www.flexcin.com/maintenance-3pack?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=Brand%2BFlexcin%2BDesktop&utm_campai...

Additional supplements I have since added are Ginger, garlic, turmeric and green tea all in powerful extract/capsule form. That is the short list as there are others both in naturally used in meals and supplement form that are anti-inflammatory. As you know any time we want to affect the body through our daily diet and not by powerful pharmaceuticals (drugs) it takes longer to feel the benefits but it is much HEALTHIER and longer lasting. It's not a quick fix it is a life style. Old habits are hard to break weather it be golf or eating so be prepared for some serious taste bud shock and changes if you become determined to tackle the challenges of inflammation and an acidic body. Studies show that a body that is both PH balanced and toward akaline (7.4 is ideal) will also be nicely oxygenated to as a result. All of this can be accomplished through diet in my opinion based on my research and life experience. The problem is that until now I have cut corners and cheated a bit too much to reap the full benefits.
Simply put, among other things we need to eat an 80% green, healthy diet. You can do your own research and just like I recommend to those taking short cuts to learn Surges swing, likewise with health, personal study and research along with action and experience = results that give lasting motivation. As it has been said, Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, TEACH a man how to catch fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." Another good one that certainly applies is, "When the student is ready the teacher will appear"
I can't begin to tell you how much quality information is now flowing my way that is helping me understand my path to vibrant health. I am ready to be the student. As I mentioned before, Cindy and I are going to do a serious internal cleansing/detox and then get really serious about what we eat.
One tool that is highly recommended is a powerful blender. It is very difficult to eat as many vegetables that is recommended so blending them into a smoothy in the morning (or when ever) is awesome. We have the Blendtech but a cheaper model that friends have used recently is the Ninja.
http://www.blendtec.com/
http://www.ninjakitchen.com/products/ninja-mega-kitchen-system-bl770/ppc/ogiva/ogivappchol.shtml?utm_source=bing&utm_med...{campaign}

I did not buy from either of the above sites. You can find deals if you search.
We got the 500.00 Blendtech for 380.00 and the Ninja can be had for119.00.
Both are currently at Sams Club here in the USA.

Robert; It seems we have come to using many of the same products for our inflammation. Along with regular daily vitamins, I too use cm8 and turmeric, ginger and still use glucos/condro. I have added Alpha Lipoic Acid capsules. They are rather cheap and available at your local Wal Mart. It is an antioxidant and inflammation fighter among other claimed advantages.

Terry,
I also take the ALA capsules and Sam-E which is also a mild mood enhancer. While not an anti-depressant(I don't take it for that as I walk around singing all day usually anyhow! lol) I do notice more less moodiness and more balance taking it verses not and it is an anti-inflammatory. I also recently added green tea extract in capsule form. Kept reading one article after another about the great benies of green tea but I can't tolerate it as a tea to drink so I got the capsules. Of course I take a mens multiple and always extra vitamin C. Haven't had a cold or flu in 10-12 years. Never understood people who say,Yes I have a cold so I'm taking vitamin C." Opps! Too little and Too late. Need it all the time to avoid sickness, not after the fact.
Now of course I'm juicing every day. Would take me some time to explain what I through in but suffice it to it is mostly green vegies with a dash of fruit. All organic. I super high speed blend it and drink it all with the valuable pulp.

Can you use the butt of the club as a reference point also? Would it be inline with your toe line.
