Hitting The Ground Behind Your Golf Ball?

I recently posted a tip on why we want to load our back leg during setup. [Loading The Back Leg] Getting into our PLHR position is one of they keys to effectively swing up because it keeps our lower body still through the backswing. In the discussion that followed the post, Bob Dense asked this simple question:

"Why do I hit the ground behind the ball ? Am I sinking too low?"

In all likelihood, Bob, you are. Don't be fooled by the terminology, "Pre-Loaded, Heavy, Right". Even though the word "heavy" could imply that you really sink down on to your back leg, that isn't the case. The move is nothing more than a slight flex in the back knee, perhaps a half inch, that shifts your weight distribution to your back leg. If you flex too much, you'll activate and stretch muscle groups from the back of your knee up to your hips and glutes and you won't be in a sound, athletically-ready stance. You want to remain lively, springy and active. One of the best ways to get instant feedback on whether you are doing this correctly is to watch your shadow. He's your best buddy, always tells the truth and never lies!

Once you get the feel for PLHR, your shots will be more consistent and straight. Your divots will change too. You won't be chunking the ball but rather nipping it off the grass, tearing the grass from the ground and not excavating it.

Keep it vertical!
