Right Swing Plus Wrong Clubs Equals Trouble

Wed, 05/18/2011 - 19:05 -- Don Trahan

The Surge reviews the second day of the golf school at Golden Bear Golf Center in Carrollton, Texas, just outside of Dallas. He'€™s talking with Certified Club Fitter, Russ Ryden, who helped establish the Swing Surgeon certification program with director Lynn Griffin. Russ made quite a startling revelation about what can happen when you improve your swing and the clubs are wrong.

In their conversation, both Russ and Don agree that if your clubs are wrong -- weight, loft, lie, length '€“ when you improve your swing you'€™re likely to get worse results! The Surge and Russ go into some detail about adjusting your setup to your clubs '€“ and how wrong that is, especially if the lie angle is wrong. It can affect everything from alignment to your dynamic balance.

And alignment was, as usual, a problem to be solved for every student. So far, the number of students in all of the Swing Surgeon schools that had proper alignment remains the same: 0%

Find out how important it is to your game to have the right tools.

Thanks for asking pal.  Yes, I am feeling much better.  Still a little sore and stiff.  Thank God, no more spasms.

I have another Dr. apt in the morning.  The adjustments and PT are hurting a bit, but I know it has to be done to get everything back where it belongs.

I have an inspection tomorrow.  After that, I will just do some reports and keep going on and off the ice.  I am trying to be a good patient.

I hope to be playing a game of golf, smoking a cigar, and blogging with you folks on my lap top in the cart when I go home to our Lord.

Who could ask for anything more?

I think I figured out what I will do. I will try to get the swingrite now and then drive up for a lesson with Derek after I take the bar. I probably won't have time to drive up to San Clemente until after I take the bar anyways. I will be able to use the swingrite at night when I get home from studying.

Not with a back swing that fast. Most people have a two beat back swing and a one beat forward swing. He had a one beat back swing and a one beat forward swing.
Some people use words like (Er-nie-Els) for their swing cadence.
I think that guy uses (I'm-Mad) for his.

I'd second the comment about not letting the guest expert talk about his specialty. I really value the tips from Surge but also look forward to first hand info from others. I'm the Seattle area and sure would like to find a fitter somewhere in this area who supported the Surge swing.

DJ:  You are sooooo close.  Your driving accuracy is spot on..... thanks to a great swing.  If you can improve your greens in reg and putting by just a smidgen you'll be consistently on the leader board.  But, you know that, and more.  Keep at it!!  We're all behind you.

On the Yahoo sport page DJ is listed as T4 with a 64 and -6 yet the PGAtour page has him at -3.   Here's hoping that the PGAtour page is wrong (unlikely)!

Captainrd,  I cannot possibly know your financial situation, but, if you can afford the golf fees, it might be worth missing a couple rounds or more in exchange for just using the range instead and spending the saved money on at least getting your own clubs checked out for, length, flex, loft and lies. That can make a major difference in itself. Call around and compare prices at local golf stores, centers, pro shops, and fitters.  Good luck.

I would go for the lesson. Then buy the swingrite when you can. there's nothing like a hands on lesson. Aside from Derek, you may also choose Jay Hyon( a Surge approved instructor in La Habra, Ca.) Check him out at www.golfeasyway.com  After I get fit I'm planning on going to iether Jay or Derek, not sure yet.

 Hello Dick,

No matter the weather, you can always take solace in a good cigar :0)

No golf for me today or tomorrow.  I did host a tournament for a local high school faculty though.  They had a great time celebrating the last day of school and I fed them a good meal.

The boss was up in Palmer playing in the US Open Local Qualifying tournament.  The wind was howling, and he didn't putt too good during the first round, but no report on today's second round yet.  I have my fingers crossed that he will catch a bit of lightning in a bottle and make it to the sectionals.

I'm taking my Dad down to Clam Gulch for some razor clam digging tomorrow.  There will be a -3 tide so we should do pretty good.  Lots of clam chowder and fritters in my future. Yum!

Well, I better hit the rack and get my rest.  It is a long drive in the morning.  Go DJ!

Hit'em Long and Straight,
Bob

Roy, Here is the reply I received from the Swing Tech folks.

Hi Terry Medley,
I am Ralph Crafton, contact me anytime  info@swingtechgolf.com.

The original Pro Adjustable Attachment is no longer available so I designed and had a machine shop make 50 attachments just to accommodate Swingtech customers.  Just parts and labor cost $35 per unit so they will sell for $50 which includes S&H.  I am working on a Home Adjustable Attachment that will sell for about half of the Pro model.  Soon I will have both models on www.swingtechgolf.com.

Let me know if you have further questions or comments.

Ralph

I asked him to please notify me, if possible, when they become available. I will keep you posted.

I have narrowed my options for a graduation celebration for myself down to two. A trip up to San Clemente to get a lesson from Derek Hardy or a swingrite. Factoring in travel/shipping the two would end up costing about the same amount. Which would you choose?

Keith, If you do your home work and make sure they are a certified, quality fitter with a good reputation you'll probably be alright. Before Doc Griffin and the fitter program they developed  only about a year a go. Surge used to just recommend we see a qualified fitter. It's fairly easy to look on line as to the qualifications and standards needed. The primary thing you can do ahead of time is do your own homework on what a qualified fitter should do for you. Dozens of blogs herein have covered that(check the archives) and there is a great book I'd recommend "The search or the perfect Golf Club" by Tom Wishon. Additionally look at his web site, Lynn Griffins site and a great one is the calgolflab.com too. Theses guys and Ralph Maltby have great info on line as to what a good, complete fitting would look like. Then you'll know what questions to ask and get a sense of weather they are a good choice. You'll know what lengths your clubs should be on your own and IF you choose to go with a smaller driver head, simply let that be known before your fitting. Buyer beware and knowledge is power.
edit;
Web sites that will assist you in finding a qualified fitter IF you are unable to go to a Lynn Griffin approved and recommended fitter-
www.GolfClubLiteracy.com for International help
www.twgolftech.com (most of our recommended fitters nationally are listed here in so it is preferable to travel to the nearest available found on SwingSurgeon.com under Golf instruction/Fitters)
Again, do your homework first and even e-mail Lynn to ask if they will suffice or not. Otherwise educate yourself as I outlined earlier, and as T Medley recommended above

I'm there Robert. Good start. He hit his second shot to 8 inches from 143 yards for his first bird, now one under after 3. Go Deej!
Edit; Now on 14 he just nailed it 163 yds to 2'4"! Birdy time again. If he keeps that up putting will be easy today:)
Update, DJ just hit his drive 354 yards on the par 4 second. Hit bunker shot to 6 feet and made his birdy.
Made a 12 footer on 6 for another bird :)

No standard and yes, some companies and I won't mention any names (taylormade) are making clubs a whole club stronger to make you think are hitting it further.  Keep in mind, clugs are already a club stronger thanks to Karsten Solheim and now you have clubs getting even stronger.  A typical PW used to be 50* and you can now find then as low as 44*.  No wonder people hit them further!

We don't even know how good he may or may not be. Every one of those balls he was hitting may have been right down the middle.
They don't give extra points for having a pretty swing (Thank Goodness).LOL

Surge or Lynn,

With regards to club fitting and UK followers of the Surge swing are we left out on a limb, you say SSGS fitters follow certain criteria when fitting clubs. If I get new clubs and fitted in the UK without SSGS fitter but do this swing what could be the effects?  If any?

Thanks Keith
Keep it up DJ!

Put your mouse over the Golf Instruction tab at the top of the page, and from there select the Instructors and Fitters item from the drop-down menu. That'll take you to a page where you can drill down through the region to find fitters in California. There are several though you may have to make the couple hour drive north to the Bay Area. I don't recall specifically at the moment.

You should have taken the time to read all the comments before you took your shot.  You would have seen that this issue was dealt with yesterday when this video was posted.

He was introducing the fitter to us.  Do you have a golf question?  Go think of one and come on back.

It is called the Surge Nation for a reason.  He is why we come here.

Maybe I misunderstood this video.  I thought Surge was introducing one of our fitters to us.   Surge introduced his guest, and asked him questions.  The fitter answered the questions and added comments when ever he wanted to.  If Surge wants him to do his own video, then he will have him do one, just like Doc and some of the other instructors have done.

Does someone have to find something to pick at on every video Surge does?

I thought the video was just fine, and as usual it gave me a lot of information.

You guys are killing me,

Dick

 Doc:

And small wonder that the 1,2, now the 3 iron are becoming ancient relics.  Those were my favorite clubs "in a former life".  In true "different Amos" style - -"way back when" the 3 iron in my "beginner's" set was the first club I learned to hit reliably with confidence. The 1 and the 2 were "a piece of cake" -- at a time when I continually hit the 3w either thin (usually) or fat.

Keep hitting them STRAIGHT and LONG

I agree with you. I don't know why, but I just sort of felt like folks were picking on him and making fun of him.  I prefer to give him the benefit of my doubt. As you say, we have no idea where the ball is actually going. Good point.

See, I was right all along.  I knew you would figure it out.

You have already started using that logical thought process which will make you a great attorney.  I thought of you today while driving in the city.  There was a law office with a sign out front.  I can't remember the guys first name, but his last name was Lawyer, then under that it said Attorney at Law.  Cracked me up.  Guess it is kind of like the US Marshall with the last name of Marshall on "In Plain Sight."

I can't help it, simple things amuse me.  Just show me something shinny and I will stay busy for hours.

Rescheduled for June 5. fingers are crossed
Went to the course tonight, it was a light rain at times and after 6:00 so really quiet. Took the camera and shot some video. After reviewing my swing I destroyed the evidence. LOL
Lower body was all over the place, but arm action wasn't bad. Maybe a little more time to work on the swing before seeing the fitter is a good thing.

I checked out the Wolf Course website. Looked great. I'm glad you spoiled yourself. Price seems good for a really nice course.
#15 looked very much the same as #17 at Sawgrass. Bunker in the middle front, contours of the green looked similar as well. How did you do. I imagine you posted it, but I missed it.

edit. Ok I found it, sounds like you enjoyed yourself and the course. I expect in the next 2 or 3 years, my wife and I will be in Vegas on a winter vacation. I'll have to keep that course in mind.
