The Volcano Drill for Sand

Fri, 11/19/2010 - 11:00 -- Don Trahan

We received a question on the blog about problems with getting it out of the sand, especially about the wedge going too deep and getting buried. Usually this problem is cause by swing down into the sand. All the power goes into the sand and your left with … the ball still in the sand.

Like I've said, shots are finesse shots, a swing depending on feel. The answer to digging in is to always swing up. To practice the feel, I have my students us the “Volcano Drill.” You make a little “volcano” with the sand and place the ball on top. As you swing up, you'll get the feel of how much sand you'll take to get the ball to your target. Have a look.
