Seventh Lesson - 3/4 Limited Turn Swing

What other sport asks you to turn your back to the target?  That number would be: None, Zero, Nada.  Yet somehow golfers are asked to do this by making the “big turn.”  This is crazy.

The big 90 degree (or more) shoulder turn is totally unnecessary in the Surge Swing and, by the way, it’s that big turn that is ruining your back.

Of the 10 Major Mistakes, this is the one that is causing you the most pain and it definitely doesn’t live up to its promise: more power.

In the Surge Swing, power comes from the speed of the arms.  We also use gravity to help us increase clubhead speed.

In the big turn you’re supposed to twist your upper body around your lower body, kind of like a corkscrew.  Just thinking about it hurts.

My son, PGA TOUR pro DJ Trahan, who uses the Surge Swing (as he’s done all his life), finished 10th in driving distance in 2010, averaging over 300 yards per drive.  So you definitely don’t need a big turn for distance.  He also finished 7th in Greens in Regulation which makes sense.  Long and straight off the tee usually allows you to stick your approach shot close to the pin.

As you attempt the big turn, you have to lift your front leg while your back leg straightens and your spine tilts forward, creating what I call the “Special K” or EBRT – end of backswing reverse tilt.

The position I teach is to place your legs shoulder-width apart, keeping your knees in line with your ankles and your hips, and to apply a little outward pressure in your thighs.  I call this “riding a skinny horse.”  You want to maintain this outward pressure and resist moving your left leg in the backswing.  This is the #1 key to perfecting the vertical, 3/4 limited turn backswing, the Surge Swing.

In the meantime, if you want more information on how my students, including my son, PGA Tour pro DJ Trahan, maintain a longer, straighter and more consistent swing, check out my complete series of instructional videos right here at www.SwingSurgeon.com.  These videos are available immediately via digital streaming.  You’ll also be able to have both the digitally streamed video and a hard copy set of DVDs for a low, additional charge.

You can try everything out with this guarantee: if your game does not improve in 90 days, I’ll give you your money back, no questions asked.

I believe in the Surge Swing.  So do thousands of my students.  Click here to check out our blog and jump right into our daily conversation.

Tomorrow, in Lesson #8, we’ll look at today’s “fix” for your slice, the inside-out swing.  Not a good “fix” at all.  If you slice, I have a much better solution.  Check it out.

Till Tomorrow,
